The Awkward Truth

I woke up the following morning surprisingly in a good mood. I walked into the kitchen to find once again a big plate of eggs on the kitchen table.
"Good morning sweetie".
I didn't realise that my Aunty was observing me from the kitchen sink.
"Oh...Hey. Thanks for making breakfast".
I returned a awkward smile after yesterday's incident flooded back to me.
She sensed my uneasiness.
"Kaziah, I was wondering if you could start work today".
I looked up at her a little disappointed. I wanted to take Arnie out for ice cream today.
She looked at me pleadingly.
"I understand that your suppose to start work next Tuesday but one of your Uncles employees called in sick yesterday afternoon and he really needs an extra hand around the shop".
I nodded my head in agreement.
She seemed pleased and left me alone in the kitchen.

I went back into my room to figure out what I should wear. I decided just to wear a pair of light ripped boyfriend jeans with the grey jumper that I was wearing yesterday. I chucked on my white converses and went into the bathroom to braid my hair. I noticed a small bruise had formed on my forehead from me smacking the wall.

I returned to the kitchen to find Billy looking somewhat upset.
"Morning Billy".
He didn't reply. He just looked up at me with his green puppy dog eyes.
"Why are you leaving? I thought you were suppose to go to work next week".
I smiled and bent down beside him.
"Your dad just needed the extra help. But I promise to come home as soon as my shift is over".
He still looked upset.
"I'm taking a friend out for ice cream later on. If you want to, I can come and pick you up?".
A little smile trickled across his face.
"Okay".

I walked out the front door then turned around and came back inside. I didn't know where the store was or how I was going I get there.
"Billy"
"Yeah"
"Do you know the address to your dads store?".
"I do but you can only get there by car because the closest bus stop to our house is a 35 minutes away".
I sat down, puzzled.
"Does your Mom have a car?".
"No. We just use dads truck if he's home".
Billy's mom walked into the kitchen holding a very upset looking Ralph.
"Aunty?"
She turned around looking flustered.
"How do I get to the store?"
She placed Ralph on the ground and disappeared down the hallway and returned with a little phone book.
She dialled a number and started talking. She sounded annoyed.
"Hey I need you to come pick up Kaziah for me and drop her off at the store".
She waited for a response and nodded her head.
I sat down and started playing with the rips in my jeans.
She picked up Ralph who started crying half way through her conversation.
"Your ride will be here in 5 minutes". She smiled lightly before returning to her bedroom.

I went and sat on the porch steps trying to soak up the sunshine. Gilbert's truck pulled up on the driveway. He seemed annoyed.
"Do you need some help?".
He looked at me confused.
"Help with what?".
"Aren't you delivering their groceries".  I pointed to the house behind me.
"No actually I've come to pick you up".
Knots started forming in the pit my stomach as memories of yesterday's awkward incident appeared in my head.
"Oh....Thanks".
I jumped in the passengers seat, feeling nervous.
Does he know?
Is he angry with me?
Did I cause a fight between him and my Aunty?.

Gilbert started his truck and pulled out of the drive way.
There was an awkward silence between us until he asked the question I hoped he didn't have to ask.
"Kaziah?"
I pretended like I was concentrating on the trees outside.
"Hmm?"
"Do you hate me?".
His question surprised me.
"Huh?".
"Do you hate me?".
"Hate you for what? I just met you yesterday. What gives me any reason to hate you?".
Now he looked surprised.
"Even after what you saw happen between me and your Aunty, your feelings towards me are mutual?"
"Well..Yeah. I'm not going to hate you because you made out with someone twice your age"
"So... It didn't affect you whatsoever?".
He was staring at me. I guess he was a little curious to see what I had to say.
"Besides being really grossed out and nearly knocking myself out with the wall......nah it didn't really have an affect on me". He smiled at me.
I decided to be brave and ask him the question I've been dying to ask since I saw it happen.
"Why do you do it? Do you know she's married?".
His smile slowly faded away.
"This going to sound out of whack but.... I make out with her to keep my job and yes I know she's married. Her husbands my boss. Remember".
I was at a loss for words.
"The only reason I got this job was because I knew she well...... had this thing for me. Every other place I applied for turned my down because I dropped out of high school early".
I sat there with my eyes wide open.
"When I found out she was the boss's wife, I made a little agreement with her".
"What was the agreement?".
I could tell he didn't want to tell me but I insisted that he did anyway.
"If I payed her my little...... visits, she would tell her husband to keep giving me jobs".
He looked down at the steering wheel ashamed.
"Look, I know I probably look like a douche right now but my family really needs the money".

I placed my hand on his arm.
"We gotta do, what we gotta do....Right?"
I looked out the window leaving my hand on his arm.
From the corner of my eye, I saw his soft smile trickle across his face again.
