Her saviour was Dev Gupta. He claimed to save her from danger, but he did not know that he saved her from her own brother who she had prayed for so long to be rescued from. In the backseat of the car, he didn't say a word to her, and she didn't know what to ask of him.
Yes, it caught her by surprise that her life was in danger all of a sudden, but her father had warned her before that there were many threats for their immediate family, so she had to be cautious.
"How come father didn't tell me about this?" Mahima asked Dev, finally breaking the silence.
Dev turned to look at her with his stony expression and Mahima frowned slightly, wondering what she had done to have him look at her with such a cold and stony gaze.
"We're on call. He called us a few minutes ago and asked us to take you quickly," Dev explained, and then stared blankly ahead.
Mahima nodded slowly. That made sense.
"Will my father be okay?" she asked him.
"He should be fine," Dev answered.
Mahima nodded again.
"So where are we going?" she asked him, and he shot her a glare, like he was irked by her constant questions.
She had always been pampered by the President, so she was used to having all of her questions answered by his men.
"My head is hurting. Not in the mood to talk. Relax a bit. We'll get there in an hour or two," Dev said, and then closed his eyes, resting back on his seat.
Mahima sighed and closed her eyes too. This protector of hers had attitude problems, but it was fine. At least he managed to get her away from her scary brother.
She didn't know how the time passed when she fell asleep. It was only when she felt like she was pushed off, that her eyes sprung open and she groggily turned to look at an infuriated looking Dev.
"Sleep against the window," he told her darkly.
She nodded and rested her head on the cold window. Perhaps she had fallen asleep on his shoulder. It had been by accident... he didn't need to be so rude!
It was only a few minutes later though that they pulled into a deserted looking area, that was quite literally in the middle of nowhere.
"Do you have a cellphone?" Dev asked her.
Mahima shook her head. She left her phone in her room when Dev had carried her outside.
"Okay good. Come with me," Dev ordered.
Mahima slowly got out of the car and followed Dev inside a shack. It was old and dirty, but she was okay with it. The driver of the car also followed them in. He was also muscular and handsome, and he was carrying a gun.
"Hi, I'm Vijith," the man introduced.
Mahima smiled at him.
"Mahima," she replied.
She noticed Dev pause out of the corner of her eye as she said his name, but he seemed to shake it off and he disappeared inside the shack.
"Don't mind him. He's very sullen and moody. You and I can be friends," Vijith said with a smile. "We'll be great friends. After all, we'll be here for some time. The three of us."
"Us three?" Mahima asked, surprised.
"Yes," Vijith answered. "We have to take turns keeping watch. Dev is really tired, so he's going to rest. You can rest inside too. I'll be outside... then in the middle of the night, me and Dev will switch roles."
Mahima nodded.
"I can keep watch too," she offered.
"No. We are here to protect you," Vijith told her. "You can relax."
Mahima smiled gratefully at the man. He wasn't too bad. At least he didn't seem to have an attitude problem like Mr. Dev Gupta. She went inside the shack and saw that there was one bed, and it looked hard as rock. There were ragged shawls on the bed and Dev was already lying down and snoring lightly.
"He must be really tired," Mahima murmured.
She noticed that beside him on the bed was a small pistol. Curious, Mahima approached the bed and reached out to touch the pistol. Before she could lay her hands on it though, Dev woke up and grabbed the gun in one swift movement, holding it up at her face.
Her eyes widened with fear.
