Mahima shook her head fearfully, saying that she didn't want to test him, and she watched the man in front of her lower his gun. Nervously, she laid down on the cold, hard ground, and tried to go back to sleep.
She heard Dev's snores fill the room, and she closed her eyes. How did he fall asleep so easily? It was so difficult for her to get to sleep.
Mahima knew nothing about this man - she didn't know where he came from, who he was, nothing. He had come here to protect her, but perhaps he really was the type of guy to kill someone for not letting them sleep. She couldn't trust him.
Soon, she drifted off, but was woken up about an hour later to a hand on her shoulder.
It was Vijith.
"Hey, why are you sleeping on the ground?" he asked her in a hushed tone.
"Dev's sleeping on the bed," Mahima answered.
"There's plenty of room for two," Vijith answered. "This Dev... wait."
He went up to his partner and shook him awake.
"Go keep watch," Dev ordered groggily.
"My shift is done. It's your turn. I'm going to sleep now, and we can't let Mahima sleep on the floor," Vijith said. "She has to sleep on the bed."
"Then what about us?" Dev asked, sitting up on the bed and rubbing his eyes.
"There's room for two," Vijith answered.
"Whatever," Dev grumbled and he got off the bed, before picking up Vijith's large gun and walking out of the small hut with it.
Mahima got up from the floor and sat on the bed. It was almost as hard as the floor, but since it was a bed, it would be easier to fall asleep on this.
She laid down on the side that was pressed to the wall and Vijith laid down next to her, keeping the small gun from earlier on a small stand beside the bed.
"Sleep well," Vijith said, pulling a shawl up and covering his and Mahima's bodies.
Mahima nodded and fell asleep immediately. She was woken up though, in the middle of the night to Vijith's hand on her stomach. Opening her eyes, she turned to look at him, and noticed that he was asleep.
She didn't want to wake him up by taking his hand off, so she went back to sleep. Then she felt his lips on her jaw and alarmed, her eyes sprung open again.
Mahima turned to face him and saw that his eyes were open.
"We could have some fun while Dev is keeping watch," Vijith said, a glint in his eyes. "What say?"
Mahima looked over his shoulder, hoping that Dev would walk in and stop him, because she didn't know how to tell him not to.
"V - Vijith, I am tired," Mahima whispered.
"It will be quick," Vijith murmured and leaned closer to her on the bed, his nose brushing against hers.
Fear took over her body and she shook her head quickly.
"Please," she begged, trying to tell him please don't do it.
Vijith seemed to take it the other way though, because before she knew it, he had come even closer to her and had almost brushed his lips with hers, making her shudder from inside.
First her own brother, now a man who was supposed to protect her.
Why was this world so cruel?
"What the hell is going on?" Dev's angry voice boomed, causing Vijith to jump back.
Dev stormed up to Vijith and grabbed him by the collar.
"Get up!" he yelled.
Vijith got up as Dev glared at him.
"Why aren't you keeping watch?" Vijith asked.
"You bastard, you know our instructions are to keep her with us. They're clear," Dev snapped. "You can't touch her you fool!"
"Nobody said we can't," Vijith argued. "It's just some fun. C'mon Dev. You can have your turn too."
Dev seemed to get really angry and he lifted his hand, slapping Vijith hard across the face.
"I'm going to tell Boss that you aren't doing your job properly," Dev warned. "So stay away from her. Go and keep watch. I don't trust you around her."
Vijith was fuming.
"I will never forget this," he threatened.
Then he stormed out of the hut.
Dev sat on the bed next to a shivering and tearful Mahima.
"What's your problem?" Dev accused darkly. "You were quietly allowing him to do whatever he wanted? Do you have no sense of self-respect?"
Mahima didn't know what to do, so she threw her arms around Dev's neck and started to sob uncontrollably. She felt a strange sense of comfort and emotional intimacy from this closeness.
