"Come here." I called to him. I watched as he swam over to me. In a quick, flawless motion, I swept him off of his feet and held him bridal style in the water. He looked surprised, and I held back a small laugh.
"Uhh...what am I supposed to do?" His cheeks were stained with pink as he blushed. I smiled at him as I explained.
"I'm going to think of a color , and you are going to try and guess it. Every time you get it wrong, I'll tip you back and dunk you." I watch him nod, but his face made it obvious that he didn't think this game sounded very fun.
"And what happens when I get it right?" He asked.
"Then I flip you over completely. That's the fun part." I winked at him and smiled.
"Oh..okay. I'm ready, I guess." He brought his hand to his nose and plugged it. "Don't go too hard on me...I've never played this so don't pick anything like aquamarine or sea foam green, okay?" His words made me laugh.
"Alright." I chose red, and then said, "Begin."
"...Green?" He guessed. I dunked him once. He wiped the water from his eyes and thought for a moment. "Purple?" He went under again.
"Keep guessing." I gave him an encouraging smile. He looked around for a moment, then at the sky.
"Blue?" He tried. I shook my head and dunked him for the third time. He pushed his hair from his eyes and sighed. "This is a hard game..." He muttered. I chuckled and waited for his next guess. After a second, he said, "How about red?" I smiled and flipped him over backwards. When he came up, he was smiling. That same feeling of awe and shock filled my chest as I stared at him.
"Kida..." I leaned forward, just like I had before and reached out to him. He continued to smile at me, but I couldn't touch him. It seemed like every time I tried to moved towards him, I was stuck in place. I stepped forward, but the distance between was was still the same no matter how many steps I took...I couldn't get him.
My alarm screeched, waking me from the dream I was having. I watched Kida's smiling face flicker as I woke more, and finally...it faded out. I opened my eyes more to the darkness of my room. My pillow was wet with tears. As I sat up and turned my alarm off, I wiped my face with the back of my other hand. This wasn't how I wanted to start the first day back to school.
My body involuntarily curled back into the covers. Maybe I could just miss today...after all, we never did anything on the first couple of days anyways. I just needed one more day of summer break. I had a whole 180 days of school I could attend. Today wouldn't be critical to my academics if I missed it. I began to fall asleep again, but my Mom knocked on the door and called out to me.
"Nowaki, come on. I made you breakfast. You'll be late if you stay in bed for much longer." I looked at my alarm and realized that I had actually been asleep for another thirty minutes. I stared at it for a long moment, silent. I was appalled at how the last week had even passed by. My silence caused my Mom to open my door and step inside. I listened as she walked over to my curtains and opened them. The sun lit up my room in an instant. She started to pull the blankets off of me as she spoke, "Let's go, Nowaki."
"Can't I just miss today? We aren't doing anything anyways..." I sighed. She shook her head.
"You just had an entire summer break to sleep in. You've got to get ready. You've only got 45 minutes left before school starts, and you still have to eat." She patted me and then left the room. Slowly, I got up and sat on the edge of my bed. I really didn't want to go to school today...or any day. Unfortunately, I had to. I got myself ready pretty slowly, and then went downstairs. I saw my plate of food sitting on the counter.
I didn't see my Mom anywhere in the kitchen, so I decided to take the food and throw it in the trash can outside. I felt bad for wasting the food she made, but I just wasn't hungry today. I could have just left the plate on the counter, but then she would watch me tomorrow to make sure I ate my food. At least this way she would think ate it. I was lying to her in a way...but I just didn't want her worrying about me eating.
"Bye Mom!" I called out to her after snatching the paper plate, and then shut the door behind me.
