The next day, I found myself seeking him among the people walking through the gates. The others stood with me for about 5 minutes before Jacob sighed and put his hands behind his head and turning around. He started to walk away and Aiden looked after him, then back out at the people entering. He, too, let out a small sigh and then said,
"I think I'm going to head inside too...I don't think that he's coming today, either..." He seemed disappointed. "You coming with, Chey?"
"...Yeah." She said after a second more of looking for him. "Yuuichi?"
"I think I'll just wait a little longer." I told them. They said they would see me later and left the gates. Now I was the only standing and waiting for Nowaki. I was sure Elisa would have stayed and waited with me, but she had woken up feeling sick so she decided to stay home today. The minutes that passed were long. I wished I was able to text him or something...then again, it sounded like he never answered his messages anyways.
I waited for a good six or seven minutes, and the bell was going to ring soon. Soon I would have to go inside whether he arrived or not. It made me kind of sad to think that he would stay home for another day, or maybe even a whole week again. That wouldn't be a good idea, considering the fact that this was when we started our lessons. I sighed as I checked the time on my phone. Three more minutes... Then, right as I was about to turn away, I spotted him.
"Nowaki!" I called out to him. His eyes flickered towards me, and then he walked over to me. I was so glad he actually came that I couldn't stop the grin the crossed my face. I watched as his face took over that same look that it had the day before when I smiled at him. He looked like he was lost in my gaze. "I'm glad you came."
"Y-yeah..." He replied and looked away from me. Though it was extremely faint, I thought I could see blush tinting his cheeks. I kept my eyes on him for a second longer. Nowaki was actually a pretty good-looking guy. If he just smiled once in a while, I bet he'd be even more attractive. He had the looks already, being tall and having lightly colored hair...he was like a typical, popular looking teenage guy. He just needed to break through that glazed look he always had.
The bell rang, breaking me from my thoughts. I felt kind of weird thinking that kind of stuff, but it was what I thought. Nowaki glanced back at me before he started to walk inside. I followed him at his side. He seemed a little different today. Though could still see the sadness in his eyes, the air around him wasn't so dark and constricting. It had been like that the other day when I went to his house, too.
"The others will be excited to see you." I mentioned. He looked straight ahead and took a breath before exhaling tiredly as if he knew how much they would exhaust him before he even reached the classroom.
"Probably." He looked like he didn't really want to deal with it, but his expression quickly washed away as he changed the subject. "Is Elisa in the classroom, too?"
"She said she felt ill, so her Mom kept her home for today." I explained. He nodded.
"I thought it was strange that she wasn't waiting at the gate." He looked as though everything made much more sense now. "Thank you for waiting for me, by the way."
"Of course." I gave him a small smile before we entered the classroom. Of course, the others instantly swarmed him and began questioning him immediately. He obviously didn't want to answer them, but he was doing his best to. I decided to just go to my desk. The last thing he probably needed was even more people hanging over his shoulder.
I watched them. Even though they were all upset, they all looked relieved and happy that he was at school. Especially Cheyenne. From what I could hear, none of them said anything about what she thought had happened. That was good...it might have offended him or hurt his feelings if they said that. It was good to know that they knew some boundaries, despite what they did any other time.
The more I sat and looked at Nowaki, the more I could see that he was actually alright with them being over-excited that he was back. He knew that they all cared for him a lot, even though having them around was clearly tiring for him. I wondered if it had been like that before, too. I knew that at some points even I felt like they were a lot, and I wasn't dealing with anything like Nowaki was. He was certainly a strong person to be able to do everything he did.
