Picture of Nurse Mareuo

Waking up from my four hour rest I look to my left to see Sebastian is gone, grabbing the cup of water I gulp it whole as I go to eat. Going to my usual spot I sit down on the the box of dusty dirt then grabbing my plate from the men starting to eat the soupy like chicken, "Back home my sister will bake her famous pumkin pie every Thanksgiving-" Sebastian takes a seat across as well as Walker who was holding a baby dog; it was usual to have some animals come around here every so often.
"Every Christmas my older cousin Quil will hand make Apple pie, somehow that crazy bastard was able to have apples deliver to him and will bake two pies for the family." Walker explains with a craving look in his eyes made us laugh, we missed eating tasteful food that had flavor and was made from the people we love, but now we have been eating soupy chicken with hardly any bread because of rats that the size of house cats almost.
Sipping the last bit of soup lft behind I wipe my mouth with my sleeves shirt, glancing at the baby dog I grin when I remebered Micah always complainging that he wnats a housepet to love other than his parents. My Tia will sew him a cat, stuff it fat, then leave the cat on bed for Micah to notice, "In my house, my Tia will make tamales or Chile relleno. While some of my family form Texas or Mexico will visit us and they will bring food over to eat. I miss those danm Tamales." I licks my lips, just wanting another taste of Tamales.
Two months of being here in the trenches and I already missed home, the warmth of being back home was something we all missed. I was starting to hardly send letters, I didn't want my family to know the bad I have done already or the terrible things that are going around.
Grabbing their empty bowls I see the man that talked his shit to me, he glances at me and Walker with a disgust look then continues to walk off with buddys. "Why is it they nag and nag bout everything, but they don't nag when we be their maids or workin' for them." Walker explains to me, shaking his head, saying his goodbyes then going back to work around the trench.
I had to agree with Walker, I worked in their yard with my bare hands, getting cuts or injured just to get paid a little extra. For what? To have talk shit behind my back and never get a thank you for the sweat and blood I just put in, Sebastian puts his hand on my shoulder as if he knew what I was thinking.
Checking the ammunition we have left, I glance around making sure no one was looking. Digging into my pocket I take out a necklace a Indian man gave to me a month ago before he died, I sent a letter of what the man the man told and it turns out he made me promise to give this to his daughter.
I been keeping the necklace hidden from Lt after he tried to make me fight him, he tried to do it again but I just leave making up excuses right out of my ass.
Looking at the necklace closely I wondered how many more other people of my color are out there, Walker is the closest one that I can relate to but it makes me wonder if somewhere out there am I safe from the constant backlash from people or is it a test to see if I'll fight back after I grow tired.
While counting the ammunition and a few others doing the same, I start to think how the Nurse will be leaving tomorrow. When I met her, I wanted to like her, but I just couldn't. I only saw her as a friend despite her affectionate towards me and I try to return the favor, but it didn't feel real and only felt more wrong than right.
Looking at the ammunition in my hands, my eyes widen suddenly as I finish up my counting for the day. I made an excuse to one of the Lt's that my knee; that I injured a while back is in pain again. Just to go back to the nurses camping grounds.
Heading inside nurse came up asking if I am injured, but I ask her if I can see Nurse Mareuo instead, luckily she agreed and told me to wait for a few minutes.
Sitting down on a white medic bed, I look across to see the bed where the Indian man died that night. I held on to the thought if maybe if I will live long enough to actually give this to his daughter.
Looking up I see Mareuo walking over with her white smile pearling out, I smile back and gave her hug as she did the same. "I missed you, when I go back to Paris. I'm going to tell my son all about you, maybe you can visit us." Mareuo pulls away as she rests a hand on my cheek genuinely.
I give her a short nod, allowing my hand to rest on her waist pulling her close to me, "I can't wait to visit you too, Mareuo." She kisses my cheek then holds the both of my hands, "I was able to find out where th man's daughter lives at-" She takes a piece of paper from her pocket and hands it to me.
Grabbing the paper I slip it inside of my back pocket, "Thank you Mareuo, I just want t-" Before I can finish my sentence, she already planted her lips on mine as I stand there stiff, but then felt her parting away.
"I am so sorry, was that your first kiss?" Mareuo asks amusingly as I nod my just to convey my reaction.
She chuckles then pecks my cheek, "I'll see you tonight." I tell her with a grin then watched her walking away, going back to her job.
Glancing to the door I see Sebastian standing there, he looked pissed off and betrayed, before I can stop him he already walked away.
Going out of the tent I see him walking back to the trenches, "Sebastian wait! You can't tell the Lt." Sebastian stops on his tracks walking stomping towards until I hit the mudded wall and there's no space between us.
"Don't worry Rual...I won't." His eyes held this heart wrenching pain, I wanted to apologize for what he saw, but even I didn't understand. "Thank you." I mutter out, watching Sebastian painfully walking away from me and whatever was going on between the both of us.
The day was barely ending and I already lost a friend, digging my hand into my pocket to get the letter that was sent to me by Micah. I open the letter starting to read;
Dear Rual,
We are doing well here, but papá is beginning to show signs of sickness. I didn't want mom to tell you because of the war, but he's been sick since you left. That is the reason why he argued with you also the incident too, but don't worry cousin, with the money you been sending us we have been able to take papá to the doctor.P.S School is going smoothly, but everybody is talking about the war at escuela (school) I do want you to come home so we can continue to fish and paint. Please come home as soon as possible.
Rubbing my neck anxiously, I close my eyes remembering that day as if it was yesterday; the argument, the punch, and almost being kicked out. All came back to as of why my Tio didn't want me to leave. I now regretted leaving and wished I was back home, but then that will mean I would not have met Sebastian, Walker, also that asshole Lt. Fischer too.
