Chapter 22

My fingers brushed against the leather notebook. Turns out, this notebook, it wasn't my roomies notebook. When I opened the cover, Noah's father name was written in sloppy cursive. I debated over and over in my head if I should read it. Noah might have left this here by purpose.

Damon walked into my bedroom, "Are you ready?" He rubbed his eyes. He had dark circles on his eyes and lost a bit of weight already. He's been having nightmares about his mom and struggling to keep his father sane. I wasn't any better.

I nodded, closed the notebook and exited the room.

My grandfather was killed the same night that Damon's mom was killed. His mother made a truce with my parents to take him down and I didn't know the details but they killed the man. In response, one of my grandfather's assassin killed Damon's mother.

In the attack on Mrs. Hunter, Natalie also got severely injured. She was still in the hospital and Damon has been visiting her every day.

The two of us were heading to his mother's funeral. It still didn't feel real. I felt like she was still there and I still felt like Noah was alive. Noah wasn't getting a funeral. An ambulance picked him up, but we couldn't seem to find where they took him and we were still searching, at least I was.

When we got to the funeral, there were so many heads in the space that it was hard to make it through the crowd. It was going to be a long funeral. It still didn't feel real. It didn't feel like she was gone. That was until, it was my turn to talk.

She was like a mother to me. If my mom was alive, maybe she would have been the same. I learned what it was like to actually have a family that was there, and support me. In a way, she wasn't paying me to stop Damon from doing ridiculous stuff. It was her way of adopting me and giving me money to live on my own. I never found who killed my mom but I didn't want to know.

After Mrs. Hunters funeral, I and Damon didn't talk and we continued that for four years. I only heard from Seth that he was dating Natalie now and was going to ask her to marry him. I worked as a private investigator and did some other paid work at the side. I was offered work with others but I shut them down because I didn't want to follow orders that I might not agree to.

"Happy birthday to me," I whispered to myself. I ordered rum and coke and the bartender was checking me out. This bar didn't have many people coming in, maybe because it was nearly in the middle of nowhere. I was originally, going to stay home but Sam decided to cancel on my birthday because she didn't want to do the walk to my new place. What shitty friend... Seth said he'd hang out with me for the whole day tomorrow and refused a no. So, I was spending this night on my own-at a bar-in the middle of nowhere.

"Hey."

I tossed my head around and drank some of my rum and coke. I slapped down the drink and doubly blinked. The edge of Damon's lips smiled. He looked more cleaned up, more mature. He wore a black jacket that really suit him but he still felt familiar. He still reminded me of the crazy stuff we did and went through.

"Hi..." My eyes danced around him until I looked at his hand.

He lifted his hand, "I'm not married."

"Huh." I took another drank and then laughed, "I'm not surprised."

"You looked surprised." He laughed. I shrugged and called the bartender. I ordered another and Damon ordered something for himself too. I gave another glance at him and he noticed. I looked away quickly again and cleared my throat.
