Okay so you all know it: at the end of book 4 Oakleaf Bearers/Battle for Skandia, we think there's that happy ending, cause everyone has safely returned to Castle Araluen.

But.

Halt was banished, and his banishment has not yet finished. As Lord Anthony protests Halt's homecoming because of his comment about Duncan being the product of King Oswald and a traveling hatcha hatcha dancer, Evanlyn suddenly starts to laugh. Laughingly, she tells everyone that because of her grandma's temperament she figured that King Oswald would have been tempted. So she knew her grandma, you'd think.

But that's not quite possible. In The Tournament at Gorlan, there's no mention of King Oswald still having a wife. Not once Oswald's wife/Duncan's mother/Evanlyn's grandmother was mentioned. King Oswald was old, so his wife had probably died already. So Evanlyn never knew her grandmother!!!!!!!!!

So maybe she made this comment about her grandma, after Duncan's stories. In my opinion, however, there's another reason, which is more reliable.

Evanlyn never made that comment because it was true. She made it, to save Halt. Halt, who'd had saved her from the Temujai, who had done so much to rescue both her and his apprentice. A debt she'd never be able to pay back. She could save Halt at this moment, though.

She laughed, and made the comment about her grandma's temperament. Her laughing, made her dad laugh, and it broke the ice-cold (hehehe) sphere everyone felt. Everyone was pretty much more relaxed after her comment (never mentioned, but pretty obvious). None of the people realized that she had never known her grandma. No one realized that her comment was pretty much fake.

Only Halt and Duncan did, but they knew what she had done, and just smiled and inwardly thanked her.
