* Emma's POV *

"Ingrid," I snapped at my foster mom by mistake then sighed. "I'm sorry, but can you just stop fussing over me? Elsa already left, I'm going to be late."

"Fine," she gave in, holding her hands up in defeat. "Are you sure your bug will make it?"

"It'll be fine," I assured her, grabbing my purse and my books. "I'll see you for dinner."

"Bye, sweetie," she called as I left, making me roll my eyes to myself as I got in my car. I went to pull out of my driveway and had to screech to a stop, hitting my seat hard when a motorcycle sped past. I sighed, shaking my head and just continuing my way to school.

I walked in with my books held to my chest, self conscious of everyone watching 'the new girl' curiously. I found the office easy enough to get my schedule and ID, but my classes were another story.

"Hi there," I cheerful voice greeted me as I nearly ran into a girl while looking for my homeroom. "You're the new girl, right? Did you need some help?"

"I, uhm," I cleared the tremor from my voice. "I'm just having some trouble finding my homeroom, it's not a big deal."

"I can show you," she said, quickly plucking my schedule from my hand and basically forcing me to follow when she started walking. "It looks like you have a lot of the same classes as me anyway. I'm Ruby, by the way, Ruby Lucas."

"Emma Swan," I introduced myself, trying to smile. I could put on a good face in crowds, but one on one I tended to panic. "And yes, I'm new. What gave me away?"

"Just the fact that I've never seen you," she laughed a bit, going into a classroom and offering me the seat next to her. "You'll find this is a pretty close knit town, everyone knows everything about everyone. It's exhausting sometimes."

"I'm sure," I agreed with a bit of a forced laugh. "Boston doesn't really have that."

"You should try out for the cheerleading squad," she suggested out of nowhere, studying me carefully. "You're crazy pretty, and it'd totally help you meet the right kind of people."

"The right kind of people?" I questioned. "What do you mean?"

"Oh you know, the popular crowd," she said as if it was obvious. "I'm the cheer captain so it's pretty much just me and my friends. If you hang around with us you'll do great... unless you're that kid."

"What kid?" I asked, following her gaze to probably the most gorgeous guy I'd ever seen and lowering my voice. "Who is that?"

"That's Killian Jones," she said quietly to me as I glanced between her and him. "He was friends with us through freshman year, but after the accident he stopped talking to everyone. Now no one knows what he does besides sit in the corner at parties and drink. His foster mom makes him go."

Before I could question her more the teacher began talking about the beginning of the year, my mind unable to focus now. Killian Jones was beyond sexy, but his eyes just looked so... sad. I could tell there was a story there.

After a few classes Ruby showed me to the cafeteria, talking the entire way. She introduced me to all her friends, including my foster sisters, Elsa and Anna, but I didn't say much and neither did Elsa. These just weren't the same kind of people we were, but I was in no position to turn down friends.

I stayed late after school in the library to start my homework, an old habit from years of group homes. I could feel someone watching me, glancing up every few minutes and always finding one person focused on my table. Killian Jones was watching me. He had work in front of him, but he was completely ignoring it to focus on me. I ignored it the best I could but soon our eyes met, the intensity in the blue of his making my heart stutter. I forced myself to tear my eyes away, quickly packing up my things and leaving.

I had to run to my car through the thunderstorm that had been going on for the last hour, letting out a breath once I got in. I went to start it but, of course, it wouldn't turn over. I sighed, gasping when there was a knock on my window and rolling it down a little.

"Did you need a ride?" A deep voice asked me and I went to get out but he stopped me, taking off his leather jacket and offering it to me. "You'll get drenched out here, just put this on."

"Uhm, thanks," I said quietly, pulling up the hood of my sweatshirt and sliding it on though it was way too big. I got out and put my backpack on, finding Killian standing in front of me. "Oh, hey. You were in the library with me."

"And I'm sure you've heard as much about me as I have about you," he nodded, getting on the motorcycle I hadn't noticed behind him. "But perhaps we should go before you catch something."

"Sorry," I nodded, getting on behind him despite all my instincts. "I just live down on Maple, the white house across from the gas station."

"Alright," he nodded and my arms quickly went around him when he sped out of the parking lot. It'd stopped raining my the time he stopped in front of my house, now freezing cold. "Home sweet home."

"Thanks," I said shyly as he helped me off the bike and I wrapped my arms around myself. "I'm Emma , by the way, Emma Swan. I figured it'd be better to introduce myself rather than let you believe what you've heard about me."

"Killian Jones," he smiled a bit. "I can help you with your car if you want. It sounds like your alternator is shot, but I get parts for cheap."

"You don't even know me," I pointed out, though I was honestly touched. "Why would you do that for me?"

"I-I don't know," he stuttered, scratching behind his ear almost like a nervous tick before his entire demeanor changed. "Look, I gotta go. Regina will be pissed if I'm late for dinner."

"Okay, uhm, thanks for the ride," I said again but before I could say anything else he took off and I called after him. "Wait!... you forgot your jacket."

But he was gone. I shook my head and went inside, hoping none of them would notice my jacket.

"Hey, sweetie," Ingrid greeted me when I came in, effectively scaring the hell out of me. "How was your first day?"

"Well my car wouldn't start," I sighed, going to grab a soda on my way to the stairs. "And that pretty much sums it up."

"I'll call a tow truck," she sighed, grabbing the phone off the wall and calling after me as I went to my room. "Dinner will be done in an hour."

I just shut my door behind me, laying Killian's jacket on the end of my bed before changing into sweats and a tank top and pulling up my hair. I sat on my bed and pulled it into my lap, leaning back against my pillows as I studied it. What was it about this guy that had my head such a mess?

Just a preview to see what you guys think, so please let me know! If you like it, I'll continue! Later , loves!
