I was sitting at lunch with Tomika, Zack, Lawrence, Freddy, and Billy. Zack, Tomika, and Freddy were all arguing about the most useless letter. Lawrence was finishing homework, and Billy as coloring in some designs in his sketch book.
"'K' is clearly the most useless letter," Freddy said.
"Is not, both Zack and I have a 'K' in our name, Freddy." Tomika pointed out.
"Yes, but your 'K' can be replaced with a 'C' and have you ever heard 'Zack' spelled with an 'H'?"
"You're full of it!"
"Then tell me, what is the most useless letter?"
"How about, well I don't know, 'X'!"
"'X' is not a stupid letter!" and it went on like this for the next couple of minutes. I was chewing on my lunch and arranging summer gigs for the band. I soon realized that I hardly know some of the girls in School of Rock. I mean, Tomika is my best friend and I've been to Marcy's a few times...but besides that, I really don't know the girls. Then a great idea popped in my head. Why don't I have a sleepover in my basement for all the girls! It's just my mom and I and our house is too big for the both of us. I have plenty of space to have five girls not including myself over. I'm sure my mom would be ok with it. Tomika could help me host it.
"Hey Tomiks?" I asked.
"Hold on a sec." she said to Freddy and Zack, who were still arguing about "K," "X," and "Q" which was now in the mix, "Yeah Summer?"
"How would you feel about hosting a sleepover for school of rock-"
"Let me stop you right there, Summer," Zack interrupted, "My mom will never let me sleep over a girls house!"
"Yeah, neither would mine..." Lawrence added.
"Why would you even bring it up? Yesterday you were just talking about how we were too young to play spin the bottle, and now you're suggesting a boy-girl sleepover at your house!" Zack finished.
"You didn't let me finish, Zack." I said, angrily, "As I was saying. Tomika, how would you feel about co-hosting a sleepover for school of rock girls? You know like the back-up singers and the roadies?"
"Ohhh.." Zack and Lawrence realized at the same time. I just glared at them, Billy laughed.
"I think that would be fun, because I feel like I don't really know them. It would be nice to get to know them better."
"That's what I was thinking!"
"So when's it gonna be?"
"I was thinking this Saturday at 5:00 pm to the next day at 12:00."
"Sounds great. I'll send out an invite."
"Excellent." The guys just stared at us.
"So you don't want to do a whole band hangout?" Zack asked.
"Fine, do you guys want to be invited to the sleepover?" I sassed.
"No!" all the guys shouted in unison.
"See," I said.
"Fine. we'll just have our own guys only hang out at my house. Freddy, Lawrence, Billy, you guys all going to be there?" Zack asked.
"Yeah! What day and time?" Freddy asked.
"Saturday at 5:00."
"Seriously?" Tomika asked.
"What?" Zack asked, genuinely confused.
"You're planning your get-together right at the same time as ours. You guys are clearly desperate and jealous that you weren't invited."
"We are not jealous, or desperate." Lawrence said.
"We just want to have a better party than you guys." Zack said.
"Check jealous and check desperate." I whispered under my breath, Billy chuckled quietly.
"Whatever, we're not going to engage in your petty competition. We're just trying to have fun with our friends. We weren't planning on starting a war or anything." Tomika scoffed.
"Fine! War is on!" Lawrence declared.
"Seriously, I just finished a speech about how that's the last thing we want." Tomika said.
"You're practically begging us for war!" Zack yelled.
"If that's what you want to think..." I said.
"It's what you guys want. Don't deny it." Freddy chimed in. Tomika and I rolled our eyes.
"C'mon let's go sit at another table." Lawrence said, grabbing his homework and his lunch tray and standing up.
"Yeah, let's go." Zack said, following Lawrence. "Freddy, you coming?" Freddy stood up and took his tray with him.
"Billy, you coming?"
"No, I'm with the girls. This whole thing is stupid and petty. Plus these two are my best friends, and lastly, and mostly, I really don't want to get up. I'm really comfortable here." He sassed the boys. THAT'S MY BEST FRIEND!!
"Ok, yeah that's true," Zack said, putting his tray back on the table and sitting back down, Lawrence and Freddy following him.
"So, 'K' is clearly the dumbest letter in the alphabet."
"Not this again!"
**Saturday**
Tomika and I were putting the finishing touches on the snack table. It was 3:30. I counted boxes of Pizza. Five pepperoni, Three cheese, and Two everything pizza's. Ten total. I then set up the fruit salad and regular salad. After that, I put out the Oreo cheesecake bites I got from a thirty-second recipe that took Tomika and I three hours to make. This sleepover would be legendary, well at least the food would be. Then we went down into the basement to set up three queen-sized air mattresses. We also put sheets on them just in case. When we invited the girls we told all of them to bring a pillow, a blanket, anything you might need for a sleepover, and a snack or drink to donate. It was going to be a great party. By the time Tomika and I finished everything, from picking out the movie to vacuuming the carpet in the living room and basement, it was 5:00. No one had knocked on the door yet. It was ok, I figured people would be late. At 5:05 Tomika and I got a text from Zack in a group chat. It was a group selfie with him, Freddy, Lawrence, and Billy. Then Zack texted.
Looks like we're winning!
But it's not a competition, or so we thought.
