"I see you are still clumsy as ever" he laughed as he gathered Maya's belongings trying to fit everything accordingly, he spotted her toolkit which happened to make a mess of its own.
"And I see you still have my gift" he smiled putting the brush back into the bag. Maya was kneeling trying to take back control of her suitcase hoping he would disappear.
"Maya why are you ignoring me?" Josh asked her still holding onto the gift he gave her.
"Let go" she said snatching the bag away from him. Maya was trying not to sound angry but just seeing him right now made her defensive. Who was he to just suddenly appear out of nowhere and think it was alright to believe they were okay all this time? Like nothing has changed? Maya didn't want to care about her suitcase; she could care less if it was spread on the subway floor what she so desperately wanted was to tackle Josh and tell him how much she missed him but she wouldn't give him the sanctification. She refused to jump on him as if he were the only guy left in the world. She knew her feelings for Josh were still uncertain but seeing him in that moment she felt as if she was back at the Matthews house celebrating Christmas. She was overwhelmed with the amount of fluttering happening inside of her, only he knew how to make her stomach feel this queasy and somewhat thrilling at the same time. She finally got her suitcase and made her way up the stairs once more.
"Let me help" Josh said as he was following her up exiting the subway station.
"No thanks" Maya said making her way through the crowd but Josh continued to linger behind her. "I'm trying to be nice!" he raised his voice as the crowd began to surround him and he could barely see ahead where Maya was.
"I don't like nice guys remember!" she screamed over her shoulder dashing her way further up in the crowd but her suitcase was making it impossible. Quickly she turned into an alley and went against a wall hoping to lose Josh. She waited a few minutes and stepped out glancing side to side and there was no sign of him.
Maya sighed in relief, "What a nightmare" She continued to her destination as Sprinkles was just up the street. She passed by one more crosswalk and saw Sprinkles on the corner, a smile appeared on Maya's face as she entered through the door and saw Riley eating a red velvet cupcake.
"Got a little frosting on your nose there kiddo", Maya said trying to wipe it off with her finger but Riley pushed her away laughing.
"I wouldn't be eating this second cupcake if you could have made it on time Maya" Riley said giving her the most serious face she could but broke out in a smile within seconds.
"Listen. I am perfectly on time someone however made me go through a few obstacles before coming" she said putting her feet up on an empty stool. Riley kicked her feet off the stool and just stared at her obnoxiously.
"Obstacles? In New York City?Oh please do share Maya" she continued eating her cupcake and Maya went silent, playing with her fingers and looking down at her feet.
"Maya.."Riley had a stern look at her face waiting to hear what Maya had too say.
Maya cleared her throat covering her mouth slightly, she mumbled "Uncle Boing" under her breath and continued to look at the ground playing with her fingers. Riley stood in place as if she didn't hear her, but Maya knew she did. They sat there for a couple minutes Maya was still waiting for Riley to say something but she still sat there pretty enjoying her cupcake.
"Aren't you just a little curious or surprised that I found Josh near our soon to be apartment. Not to mention him magically appearing as I came out of the Subway?" Maya said in disbelief as if this was a normal thing to happen, especially since it was moving day for them. This couldn't be a coincidence.
"I asked Josh to help us move" Riley quickly said stuffing the last of her cupcake so she wouldn't be able to talk. Hearing what Riley just said gave her chills down her spine. She didn't want Josh to be here she already established he was a distraction and her twisted feelings for him didn't make it any better. Before she could say anything back she heard knocking on the window. Maya paused. "Noo" she said to Riley she didn't want to look because she knew what is was. She wanted to ignore it but the knocking came harder she turned around and saw Josh outside Sprinkles just standing there. Their eyes met and he slightly waved at Maya. She didn't know if she was more horrified right now or before at the subway. She turned slowly looking back at Riley, "You have got to be joking". She placed her head on the table and closed her eyes hoping she would soon wake up from this disaster.
