I walked up to the familiar house I'd been seeing for almost the past week now. I felt safe over here. It made me feel there wasn't anything wrong but when I left alone, the pain hit me. The hurt slapped me in the face like the wind whipping around your hair on one of those glum, you-feel-like-doing-nothing days and it hits you smack in the face and might even sting a little.
But this house just had something about it that made not only me but both of us safe. I never wanted to leave even when we left together.
I rang the door bell. I waited a few minutes wondering if anyone was home. I saw their cars in the drive way so someone must be home. Then everything seemed to happen in slow motion.
She opened the door and looked up at me. Her hair was in a messy ponytail, probably from laying around all day. Her nose was a shade of pink and I heard her sniffle. Her eyes were red and tired. I could tell she had been crying seconds before she had just opened the door. She gave me a weak smile making my heart ache for her to be going through this. She reached up and hugged me. I rubbed her back, letting her know I was here to help her out however I could.
We let go and she turned to go inside.
"Serenity," I said. I mentally remindedmyself she couldn't hear any more so I grabbed her wrist.
She turned around and gave me a confused look.
Let's go to my house today, I signed. She immediately gave her genuine smile and grabbed her jacket from the coat hook by the door. She leaned her head in the house, facing the living room telling someone she was going with me. Her charm bracelet jingled as she shut the door then we walked hand in hand to my house.

I climbed the stairs two at a time because I was excited to show her what I had gotten her. I reached the top of the stairs and she was only half way up. She looked up at me and smirked while shaking her head. When she finally reached the top step after what seemed like forever, I took her hand and pulled her along behind me to my room.
I flung open the door and she released my hand to sit on my bed. I went over to a drawer in my dresser and pulled out a tiny velvet box. I turned around to see her trying to peek over my shoulder to see what I had. I knew she would love what I had put in the box. I drew up the design myself and it took about three days to fully create it.
I handed the box to her and she took it without a complaint about me getting her something.
She lifted the lid and her hand covered her mouth in shock. Sitting there in the tiny box was a new silver, originally designed charm. Instead of spelling out her whole name I just deigned the 'S' for 'Serenity.'
Connor, it's beautiful! She signed.
I designed it myself, I slightly blushed.
I unhooked her bracelet from her wrist to attach the newest charm to her collection. After doing do, I snapped the bracelet back on her wrist.
Thank you so much! I love it! She signed, throwing her arms around me.
"Not a problem at all," I said, smiling into her hair.
We hugged for a few minutes. When we unhugged, I stood up an walked over to the keyboard that is set up in my room next to the leather couch.
I started playing the keys to Coldplay's song, "Fix You."
Serenity got up and sat down next to me on the bench. She watched as my fingers swiftly danced across the keys. I finished the chorus and stopped playing.
I've always wanted to learn how to play the keyboard, she signed. And the guitar.
Well you can start now. You know, if you still want to, I smiled. She nodded, eager to learn.
In that moment, I completely forgot about her not hearing. I started instructing her how to do things and telling her which keys were which. I placed her hands on the keys and she looked up at me, trying to read my lips to figure out what I'm saying.
She tries playing but she had a confused look on her face as she played. I tried helping her but again I was talking too fast and she was even more frustrated. She kept trying to understand but she couldn't take it any longer.
She screamed and she stood up and started pacing around the room.
"You're not doing what I think you're doing?" Riley hollered from downstairs.
"No Riley," I yelled back, agitated.
What's wrong, Serenity? I signed concerned.
She quit pacing and looked at me, narrowing here eyes. She then flumped down next to me on the bench and started sobbing into my shoulder. I wrapped my arms around her and started stroking her hair saying, "It's okay" over and over. I now realize she can't hear me but I don't care.
My Serenity needed me to help her through this hard time. And that's exactly what I'm going to do. Even if it means letting her soak my shirt, and cry her heart out.
