\Twenty - The Calm - I\

It's been two days since the bridge was bombed.

I stood by Octavia, helping her hang meat up on the bars in the smoke-house. A boy, Del, walked in with firewood, dropping too many logs in the fire with a stupid comment.

"You don't want the fire too big, so maybe just try and knock it down with wet leaves." Octavia suggested after I pointed her attention in the direction of Del.

"You get that from your boy-friend? Grounder pounder?" I glared at the teen, throwing a metal hook his way.

"Help us or get the hell out of here."

"She's right, you don't want the fire too big." Murphy spoke from the entrance, nodding at me. "Larger fires wont preserve the meat as well."

"Can't take the heat? Get outta the smokehouse." Del grumbled. "You should be kissing our asses for being allowed back in camp."

"I'm going to kick your ass if you don't shut the hell up, Del." I sneered at him, picking up another slice of meat.

He rolled his eyes at me. "Awe, Bellamy's little princess thinks-" Del started, but was soon cut off by Octavia and Murphy.

"Don't call her that." He rolled his eyes again and strolled out of the smokehouse, and I gave thankful looks to Octavia and Murphy.

"Bellamy couldn't get you two better jobs? Anything would be better than working in the meat furnace." Murphy asked, looking to thew two of us.

"Oh, probably." Octavia said.

"But that would just mean someone else would have to do it." I stated, turning away from him.

We worked for awhile longer, well, until the smokehouse blew up in flames.

I don't know where Octavia and Murphy disappeared off to, because as soon as the heat picked up, so did the black smoke clouded my vision and lungs. I heard shouting all around me grow louder as I struggled to breath in the low oxygen in the now fire-filled smokehouse.

If I'm going to go out, it's sure as hell is not going to be by fire.

I looked to see the only area I could guess the door was, and ran that way, and right into Octavia. She sighed, relieved as I coughed up a lung. I saw Bellamy by my side, and Murphy giving an evil glare to Del.

"This is ALL YOUR FAULT!" He shouted, trying to punch the well-deserving boy, but Bellamy was quick to intervene.

"Stop! Save it for the grounders!" Murphy and Del backed off each other, glares still hot.

"Now what the hell are we going to do?" Octavia screamed at her brother, throwing her hand out and pointing to the burning smoke-house. "That was ALL the food!"

No one answered, just stared at the growing fire.

After we had determined that the food was 100% disintegrated, everyone left to go hunting. . . Everyone but Raven, Monty, and I. I sat in her tent, listening to then ramble abut how to make radios work. I was an art kid. I knew nothing about mechanics.

"I found some good wire!" Raven exclaimed, cutting off the humming sounds emitting from the both under Monty's hand. "This guy was using it to fix his bed. Did you find anything else from the Exo-" Raven stopped and looked to me for a second. "Sorry- the wreckage?"

"Yeah, a data log." Monty looked between Raven and I. "Wanna hear something weird?"

I listened to whirring emitting from the box once more. "Just sounds like interference." Raven noted.
