I had built up the courage and finally got the chance to rub it in Aubrey's face that I never wanted to see him again.
But why? Why did an hour later I had to face his ass again, waiting for me at my house, with this stupid smile plastered on his face.
"Are you going to answer me, or you're just going to continue blocking my way?"
He realises he was sitting and quickly stand up. "I'm sorry." He makes a gesture with his hands like a gentleman that I go in the front.
"I think you got it all wrong. That wasn't an invitation."
"You're never going to make this easy for me, are you?" He takes a step forward stopping right in front of me. I moved my eyes from his chest to his own. "I really need to talk to you Nicki."
"I think you already said enough for a lifetime!" I raise my tone of voice but then I remember this was not the time of the day. "Look, we don't have anything to talk about. Walk away from my life cause I-"
"WHY ARE YOU BEING SO FUCKING HARDHEADED! WOULD IT KILL YOU IF YOU LISTEN TO ME FOR A SEC?"
His scream scares even the tips of my hair. I stay still until I give in and dig for my keys inside my purse. Once the door was open, I pull Aubrey inside.
I have to confess that the sight of him inside my house was kind of something I've wanted. That's the problem of daydreaming, you create have high expectations and end up disappointed by them.
"I imagined a different decoration." He comments looking around.
Since his indelicate observations back at the hospital, I made a few arrangements. I moved the furniture around, put a few portraits of my family and friends on the walls, a few plants on the corners to create an ambient. Surprisingly, they're still alive.
"What were you expecting? A plastic chair and a TV on a wooden table?" I roll my eyes and go over to the long couch drop my belongings on it.
"I never called you boring." He crosses his arms. The grey turtleneck sweater he wore wasn't enough to cover his slightly flexed muscles. Suddenly I start to feel hot.
"No, you didn't. But message received."
"Unbelievable, I come here humbly to apologise and you, you..."
"Don't offer you anything to drink?" I respond with a hand on my hip.
The stare game starts, one waiting the others reaction but no one seems to move.
"Ummmm, what are you guys doing?" Justine's voice fils the room and catches our attention. She was coming down the stairs with Cuddles on her arms who was happy to see me.
"Is that my dog?" He Aubrey asks modestly but his body language demonstrates that was actually mad about it.
"No, that's my dog, Cuddles."
"No, Onika, that is my dog." He gives me an uncomfortable look. "What are you doing with him anyway?"
The dog in question was now out of Justine's embrace making himself comfortable ready for a nap on his beloved carpet I put for him under the sideboard. He is such a drama lover.
"That's a long story. But not to fill that pea you call a brain, he decided to stay with me. So, I'm his new owner now."
"He decided to stay with you?? You probably kidnapped the poor animal to blackmail me or something. What's it gonna be this time? Did we get married? How are our kids? The way you're crazy I don't doubt you came up with some shit like a surprise wedding."
I bet he was told about the wedding by that gossiping staff at the hospital and now he wants to blame it all on me.
"I did not come up with a weeding! I had nothing to do with that mess. Hell, I'm known as the fugitive bride back in that hospital. AND I AM NOT FUCKING CRAZY!" I finish with stamping my foot down followed a loud sigh.
"You're crazy and the dog is mine."
"No, he is mine!"
A loud whistle, one of those that you use your fingers shushed our discussion. "God, you guys seem like you're never gonna end this!"
"Justine, tell your little friend here that who's the real owner of Furball." I cannot believe he's flirting with Justine for a yes. That's not fair.
"His name is Furball? I thought it was Cuddles." She says surprised.
"See what you've done? Changing his name and shit. That's it, I'm taking him with me."
He walks in Cuddles' direction bit I stop him by standing in his way. "No, stay away from him."
"His going with me. End of discussion."
"STOP IT! That's enough!" We both look up to an angry Justine. "I'm staying with him until you two stop with this childishness."
"Jus, that's not going to work. You too have work." Aubrey argues.
"For your information, Mr. Graham, as of last month, I'm unemployed..." She rolls her eyes as she didn't want to remember that fact, then returns to her calm self. "What you two adults need to do is stop arguing like spoiled little brats because of some pendent stuff. You need to talk, communicate with each other."
I furrow my eyebrows at her. "Are you using your couples therapy on us."
"Exactly!" She slyly grins at me.
"Ridiculous! We're not a couple." That said by him made me feel some type of way, but it was still a fact.
"But you started off as one, and that's the only way you're going to get out of this mess... You have three days. Do whatever you want, but talk. Monday morning I'll decide who's staying with Cuddles." Aubrey gives her a look. "I mean, Furball."
"You have got to be kidding me." He groans.
"Absolutely not. You have Friday night, Saturday and Sunday to sort it out. And if I find out you didn't talk, you'll never see a single fur from this animal again. And I'll know you if you lie to me." By the look on her face, I could that see was deadass serious. Now recalling that time when she was babysitting her nephew then his bird 'flew away', I don't doubt her.
"Say goodbye to Furball. I'm going back to my apartment today."
I groan getting on my knees to caress Cuddles one last time. Justine was right, I need to face Aubrey to get some peace within myself. And my competitive side was telling me to do whatever it takes to get Cuddles back.
As for Aubrey, he just stood there without any action as we watch Justine leaving the house with Cuddles on her arms.
"Are you really giving in?" He asks me.
"Yeah, I mean, she's been feeling kind of down about losing her job, it wouldn't hurt playing the role as her patients for a while. Besides, she usually does what she says she's gonna do and I really like having that little guy's company."
He takes a deep breath in defeat before marching over to the door. "I'll come by tomorrow at eight." With that he closes the door, leaving me alone in this big empty house.
Once I heard that in order to rise we need to fall, to be brave we need to fear, to forget we need to know. I think I'm going to follow that anonymous advice, I can only move forward if I pass a brush on this mess.
It's time to get to know Aubrey Drake Graham in order to forget him.
