I took a deep breath before I opened the car door with my shaky fingers. I didn't know what to expect, how to react. I stayed home from school and slept till 3:30 pm. It was now 5 pm.
Finally, I managed to keep my knees from trembling when my feet touched the ground. I got out of my car and stood on the parking lot of St Judes hospital. I was going by myself. Mom had offered to come with but I declined, as I was standing there I couldn't remember why.
After a few minutes I had built up the courage to go inside. I asked for Troye at the administration. The lady behind the desk started typing and as she did that my hands started to get sweaty. I staggered a bit before she told me Troye was on the 5th floor, first door to the right. I thanked her and walked through the hall towards the elevator. But before I got in I went into the tiny shop next to it and bought a big balloon in the shape of a coffee cup that said: Get well soon! in big white letters.
I stood in front of his door, I knew I had to knock. I lifted my hand, right at that moment a little kid walked past me, followed by his parents. He was pushing his own infusion fluid that hang in a bag from this pole with wheels. He was bald and didn't have eyelashes. He looked at my balloon with big eyes, they were filled with adoration. He stood still. His parents bumped into him. They pushed him forward gently.
'Keep walking we're already late' They walked on.
'If I don't complain about my pain all day, do I get a balloon like that?' the boy asked his parents, causing my heart to sink a little and my knees to turn weak. That pulled on my heartstrings.
I knocked on Troye's door. I heard footsteps, the door was opened by Laurelle. She smiled at me 'Connor' but I could see it was forced.
'Connor?' I heard a voice that was happy to see me. 'Mom you can take a break now, Connor knows how to take care of me' I heard that same voice that made my heart do that flippy flop thing inside. I nodded in agreement hoping that she wouldn't notice my trembling knees. She stepped aside to let me in. I stepped inside. It was a small room, one hospital bed, one normal bed and a sink was all there was. A door to a bathroom was on the left wall. The walls were painted orange. Troye was sitting on the hospital bed. And infusion in his inner elbow and one on the back of his hand. His face was as white as a sheet.
'Hi..' I uttered as I was taken aback by what I saw, my heart sank to my stomach as Troye tried to force a smile, but it didn't work out because his eyes screamed exhausted.
'If you need me, I'm eating dinner on the 4th floor.' Laurelle stated, and she smiled again.
'sure mom' Troye nodded.
' love you tokky' she said before she went out the door. I looked back at Troye who turned his head to me.
'Nice balloon' he smirked.
'you think so? I bought it for you' I replied, blushing a little. I handed it over to him. I sat down on his bedside. I took a deep breath.
'So.. how are you..?' I knew it was a stupid question, but I just couldn't come up with anything else. He leaned over to the side and attempted to tie the balloon to his bed.
'I'm fine' he stated as he pulled the string around his bed. I tilted my head. 'Troye..'
'OUCH dang it' he uttered when his hand with the infusion hurt as soon as he moved it to grab the other side of the string. He gave up and just held the balloon in his hand.
'Besides the cancer I'm fine' he said. I smiled supportively.
'Give it to me' I pointed at the balloon. he handed it over to me. I bent over his bed to tie it to his bedside.
