In her last year of high school when there was a buzz about college she had heard stories of how awesome it was. Pictures and videos were shown on different college websites of students looking genuinely happy like college was the best place they had ever been. It was a lie, a carefully plotted conspiracy deliberately misleading innocent, easily influenced, unsuspecting teenagers. She had thought many times during her first semester to call her lawyer and sue but figured the case wouldn't be taken seriously after all lawyers and judges had to go to college to be where they were.
The one thing to be said about college campuses unlike high school's narrow halls, they were huge and when you wanted to avoid someone it was pretty easy that is unless that person was in all 10 of your classes and went to the same extra-curricular activities you did – then it was impossible.
Every class she went Shanique was there and the next week was a very awkward one. Lectures she managed to stay on the other side of the lecture theater but in tutorials avoiding each other was not a prospect. She tried though.
Their tutor for Basic Economics and Calculus for Economics, Andre Payne, was a friend from high school even though he was older than them both by 2 years. Having grown used to seeing them sitting together in both tutorials he was pretty shocked when he showed up to their Calculus class and saw Chanel to the back left and Shanique to the front right of his class. He sensed the vibe immediately.
"Hey kids, today we're going to be reviewing the Problem Set 5 on Multivariate Calculus. Who's ready to do number 1?" Andre asked. There was a collective groan from the class.
"Chanel, this one is yours!" She felt that one coming from a mile and didn't hesitate to grab her review paper and head to the board. While she was working the problem he turned to Shanique and asked her to do the second one on the other side of the board.
"I'll just wait until she's done" was her response to which Andre said "What? Y'all had a lover's quarrel or something?" Neither of them answered but the class erupted in laughter. If only he knew how close to the truth that was but Chanel was turned to the board so he couldn't read her expression and see the tears that filled her eyes that she refused to cry. She wasn't worth Shanique's trust then Shanique was definitely not worth her tears so why did she feel like a part of her had been missing since Friday? Why had seeing Shanique relieved and angered her at the same time?
She finished the problem in silence and went back to her seat. Andre didn't bother asking her to explain her answer for which she was grateful and as Shanique went up to do question 2 she kept her eyes trained on the dog ear in the corner of her paper. Shanique would have organized her notes in neat piles so she wouldn't have dog eared pages.
The rest of Calculus class passed pretty uneventfully but Andre made up a vague excuse to have them both stay behind.
"So what's up you two?"
"Nothing" they both said at the same time without looking at each other or Andre. It seems the ground had an interesting pattern neither of them had noticed before.
"Ok cool. I'm concerned but if you guys say it's fine then alright. If you guys do find that you have a problem I'm here."
With that he left them together in the empty room.
Shanique was tempted to say something but she figured after the excitement over the weekend Chanel just needed space.
Chanel wanted to apologize, she didn't regret what happened between them but needed her best friend back and would take her any way she could.
Both of them left the room without another word.
