When she stepped through the door she automatically headed in the direction of her room until she heard a utensil fall. Turning around she saw her mother watching her intently. The shock of seeing her was almost enough to wash her happiness down the drain, almost. They didn't have the best of relationships and most times completely avoided each other to preserve their sanity. Ever since the divorce her mother had taken to blaming her for everything since her father could no longer be the target. At times she wished her father had taken her with him but she knew his busy lifestyle and the thought of being halfway across the country without the one stability in her life - her best friend would have been terrifying and enough to make her bitter. The only thing that could be said about her mother is that when she happened to come home and wasn't drunk she cooked the best meals.
The scent of whatever she had on the stove was tantalizing but her expression was enough to douse any appetite Chanel had. She sensed the argument coming from a mile away at the speed of a freight train and assumed she saw what happened outside. Not wanting to initiate the conversation Chanel waited until her mother said "What was that? Who was that girl? Why were you kissing her? Are you a lesbian? Is Shanique one too? I always knew there was something wrong with that child"
Her words caused anger to stir in Chanel like coffee in a cup but her expression showed none of what she was feeling. She was so used to her mother's judgmental disposition that her face was a blank canvas. She responded slowly "That girl is Kayliah, my girlfriend which is why I was kissing her. Yes I'm a lesbian. Lastly, Shanique's sexual orientation is none of your business."
If she could say one thing about her self discovery it was that she was now a much bolder person and no longer shrank from confrontations.
Her mother looked like she swallowed a bitter lemon so she knew the argument would be a rough one.
"You're... A... Lesbian??? A LESBIAN??" she screamed at the top of her lungs "I don't believe this! My only child, a lesbian. This is all that girl's fault I bet. You're no longer allowed to see her or Shanique." With that she turned and went back to cooking like they had just discussed the weather.
Well Chanel refused to let her mother decide what her sexual orientation should be. She had lived her life and made her own mistakes, Chanel wouldn't allow her to live hers as well.
"I won't stop seeing either of them so you might as well get used to it." she said with finality and walked to her room slamming the door behind her.
The urge to cry was overwhelming but instead she grabbed her phone. Her first thought was to message Shanique but she didn't want to explain her relationship with Kayliah or her mother's awful comments about her. She wasn't sure she wanted to message Kayliah either since she was so defensive about her and knew she would have nothing good to tell her mother. Stuck between a rock and a hard place she was rescued when the lady of the hour, Kayliah herself messaged her.
Kay: Honey I'm home 😉
Chanel: Great! I'm in my room I just had an argument with my mom...
She wasn't sure if she should elaborate so she hit the send button before she could change her mind.
Kay: Oh why?
Before she could answer her phone rang. Checking the caller ID she smiled, it was Kayliah.
The first thing Kayliah said when she answered was "Are you ok?" and the compassion in her voice brought Chanel to tears. She explained her relationship with her mother and how she never felt like she did anything right or was good enough. She felt that sooner or later she would disappoint Kayliah the same way she usually disappointed everyone else and was tempted to end the relationship before it got that far. The only problem was she felt like she had been drowning all this time and the relationship was her float, tossed in at the last minute for her to grab and rescue herself from the constraints of her lifes' waves. As selfish as it was she refused to let go, that would be letting her mother control her and she refused to go under - not when she had taken her first gulp of pure clean air in a very long time.
