The tension returned as she saw the expression on her mother's face but her aloof disposition did not change although inside her she was trembling, partly in fear but mostly in anticipation of the impending argument. She was surprised when her mother said nothing of their earlier spat as she shared dinner. Curried shrimp and white rice, one of her favorite meals but tonight her stomach was in knots and she barely tasted the food as she ate mechanically. She knew it was good, it always was but it could have been ash for all the attention she paid to the taste. Her mother kept glancing at her periodically and when she felt the eyes her initial reaction was to squirm but singing the "I'm a big kid now" commercial in her head she avoided doing just that. Her mother was the type to spot a weakness and use it ruthlessly against you but Chanel knew her game and refused to play.
When she was finished eating she got up to clear the dishes. Her mother's sharp "Sit" had her reconsidering and doing just that.
Taking a calming breath she was again willing to wait on her mother to make the first move. He had become so used to their arguments starting with her mother that it became ingrained in her, as much a part of her as brushing her teeth before bed. Familiar. but she couldn't remain under that particular umbrella anymore so instead she asked while rising from her chair "Why?"
Her actions and question seemed to catch her mother off guard so she plunged right in.
"I know what this argument is going to be about and you might as well not even bother. You don't own me, you don't control me or my life and you can't tell me who to talk to." The only reason she kept back the rest of what she wanted to say was because she had promised Kayliah she wouldn't be unnecessarily disrespectful.
Her mother sat watching her carefully for almost a minute before she started to clap.
Chanel saw red. It would be so easy for her to say the hateful things she was thinking but instead she hid her emotions behind a blank calm facial expression and waited for her mother's antics to stop. Her predictability in arguments was always one of the things that made her mother win and she could sense the fear in her of the unknown. Margaret was many things and transparent was one of the many.
"That was a nice little slew of words but listen to me child. You are under my roof and you'll do as I say. You are not to see both girls again and you are not a lesbian. You're barely 20 and feel like you know everything, I was at that stage once so you will do as I say."
Chanel almost laughed. Almost. In the speech her mother just gave the thing that stood out the most was her age. She had forgotten her birthday was in a few weeks. Her excitement however was dozed when her mother continued.
"I don't want to hear anything else about this lesbian thing" she said getting up from the table.
"But you will." Chanel replied simply before carrying her dish to the sink. She knew the argument wasn't over so it was no surprise to her that when she turned back in the direction of the dining room her mother's face was turning dark like the sky setting up before the rain fell. And she knew the storm was coming.
"I'm sorry? It seems I wasn't clear enough before" she said when she stalked over to Chanel. "You are forbidden from seeing those girls while you are under my roof you are under my rules and I will not stand for this back answering".
"No it seems I was the one not clear" Chanel said evenly. "I won't stop talking to my best friend or my girlfriend just because you said so".
She was not expecting the slap that connected with her cheek and brought tears to her eyes immediately. Backing away from her mother while holding her cheek she refused to cry. Looking straight into Margaret's eyes she said with determination "That won't stop me either" before brushing past her and slamming the door to her room shut.
