Chapter 6

She was sitting on one of the outside benches of Little Jay's waiting for Nique. Before their fight it was a ritual for them to be there every Friday for  Little Jay's big burgers, fries and milkshake and they had agreed to meet there at 3:30 as usual. Their bench was directly below an AC unit that serviced inside but the pipe running from it led to the front of the building and unto the roof. The first thing she noticed was that the pipe was leaking slowly and forming half of a heart on the pavement.

Dropping her bag on the bench Shanique started to tell her about her time at the orphanage she volunteered at on Fridays - just like old times. Nellie had habitually already ordered for them so when their order was ready Shanique collected it and came back to the table. They ate in relative silence so Chanel knew Shanique had something on her mind.

"You gonna tell me what's up with you or just have me in suspense?". Shanique didn't say anything and she felt a sense of dread like she knew the news wouldn't be good.

Pushing away her empty tray she waited while Shanique chewed and swallowed the last of her food. Realizing she couldn't put off sharing the news any longer she blurted

"I have a girlfriend."

Nellie felt like a weight was crushing her chest. She knew they hadn't spoken about what had almost happened in her bedroom and some part of her had foolishly hoped Nique would change her mind about getting involved with her but clearly not. She turned her attention to the water-formed half a heart and watched as the bottom part was dried by the sun. She had a feeling it had  heard the admonition and was mimicking the actions of her own heart.

"Ok cool. Who is she?" She didn't want to know but figured she could pretend to and save her tears for when she was alone with her thoughts tonight.

"You don't know her yet but I'll introduce you guys soon". She felt like she was watching the convo from an outsider's perspective and asked the appropriate questions at the right time. When silence overtook their conversation Shanique announced she was going to meet the girl and got up. They hugged briefly before she left Nellie with her thoughts. Looking back at the pavement she watched as the pipe made another effort to create a heart. Rebuilding the old one with an increased concentration, relentless pattering on the pavement until it got the right shape. She sun had disappeared with Shanique and she couldn't help but think that's how it always was and would always be - like when Nique left her world got dull and dreary. The dripping water formed a heart and she got up to empty their garbage and leave. She walked in the direction of the heart and as she passed by she noticed belatedly that a thin crack was running down the middle of the water-made heart in a jagged line.

Later that night she was searching the small compartment of her bag for her calculator when she found the bubblegum wrapper with the mystery girl's - no the paper said her name was Kayliah number. She thought back to their conversation and before she could change her mind or chicken out she texted her.

Nellie: Hey.

Wow! Real original there Chanel she thought after sending the message and wished she could take it back. Maybe hey had sounded too casual like she was a boring texter. She was about to berate herself some more when she heard her message tone Ty Dolla $ign - Wavy. 

Kayliah: Hey! Who's this?

Nellie immediately liked how she texted - it was kinda cheery but not overly so or thirsty like if she had added a few "y's to the hey

Nellie: I'm Chanel but everybody calls me Nellie. You gave me your number at the library

Kayliah: Hey baby girl. What's good? What you doing tonight?

She didn't want to admit that her plans had included a night snuggling with her matrix algebra problem set and her ever loving and dependable Casio calculator.

Nellie: I dont know yet. What's up?

Kayliah: Wanna chill with me? 

She didn't hesitate to accept the invitation and they agreed to meet in an hour at Little Jay's which was a 5 minute walk from her home.
