Chapter Thirty-Three:
Knock.
Knock.
Something in the air instantly shifted at the sound of someone knocking on the front door. Nola and her aunt held their breath as the two of them quickly turned their attention to the door. Neither said a word, at first.
Instead, Nola and Suzanna, who had given up on the idea of Parker showing up, were frozen in place with a sliver of hope that it might be Parker at the door.
"You heard that right? It sounded like a knock on tehf ront door. I'm not imagining it." Suzanna said in a rushed tone. She'd remembered mistaking Una closing her truck as the sound of someone (she was hoping was Parker) closing their car door, just few moments before. Her intention was that this time Nola could back her up and confirm that she heard what she thought she heard.
Nola nodded, "It ... was a knock."
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
"Well, we can't keep whoever it is waiting any longer." Suzanna wasn't even able to take one step towards the door before Nola grabbed the sleeve of her shirt and tugged on it. Suzanna looked over at Nola, "What's wrong?"
"What if it's Parker?" Nola's eyes were wide with fear. She feared that she would see Parker and not be upset at him. She wanted to be mad. Something inside her was boiling angry and she didn't want it to simmer down at the sight of him. Nola was not naive to the fact that Parker had a huge charm on her.
Just thinking of the hold he had on her, made Nola become slightly scared. She didn't want a repeat of Mitch. Yet, she quickly shook that thought out of her mind because Parker was nothing like Mitch. She knew that.
Suzanna shrugged her shoulders, "There is only one way to tell who is at the door. Someone answers it."
Nola glanced at her aunt and then at the door. "I-I can do it."
"Are you sure? I can do -"
Nola didn't wait for her aunt to finish what she was saying, yet alone allow give her mind time to convince her not to answer the door. It took only a matter of a few second for Nola to reach the door, she took a large inhale and swung the door open.
"Parker?" She called out to the retreating figure.
Parker turned around and laid eyes on Nola. The corner of his lips twitched up into a smile at the mere sight of her. "Nola." Parker raced up to the door. "Don't hate me, Nola. I'm sorry that I was late-"
"Parks!"
Parker looked over his shoulder to see his mother running towards him.
Mrs. Sims reached Parker and Nola with a huge smile on her face. She looked at her son with pride before glancing over at Nola. "I'm so happy you two are going on a date and I get to drive y'all!"
