Chapter Forty-Five:
After Parker and Nola were given their drinks, the waiter took their orders. Nola was glad that both Parker and the waiter were patient, as she took longer than one might when ordering. Once she was done, Nola quickly thanked the waiter while keeping her eyes glued to her tea glass. She went silent and keenly watched the clear droplets of condensation surrounding the glass with the strong hope that the attention would be taken off of her.
Not noticing anything alarmingly different than the other odd people he meets on daily basis, the waiter brushed off Nola's behavior. He informed the two that their meals should be ready shortly, before scurrying back into the kitchen.
When the waiter disappeared with their orders, Parker cleared his throat. "I'm not telling you what to do but I think you should change psychologist. Dr. Weston went against doctor-patient confidentiality and talked to Mr. Harper about you and her's meeting."
His fingers reached out and Parker found himself fiddling with the silverware placed in front of him. He had his gaze set on the table because he feared the expression that was on Nola's face.
Parker knew that she was sensitive and he always worried what he said or did might break her. And, he had broken her before, the prime example being the other day with the highway incident.
Blinking, Parker's eyes stayed closed longer than normal. He could not believe that he had made her so upset the other day. He was foolish and knew that it would be one of the many things he would live to regret for the rest of his life.
Opening his eyes, Parker found himself staring straight at Nola.
Just the sight of her took his breath away as Parker felt all the air in his body escape him. He tried thinking and regaining control of his breathing but that was impossible because his brain could not function as he took in the beautiful woman sitting across from him.
At first, it was her eyes that struck something inside him. He remembered, in that moment, that the day he talked to her in the main office, after seeing her limp in, she had the dullest green eyes he had ever seen.
Parker remembered when he asked her, that day, if she wanted a sucker and how he had searched her eyes for an answer. It wasn't until now that he noted the answer he was looking for was not just if she wanted a sucker, but Parker wanted to see if she was truly alive and happy. That day he recalled seeing nothing but dull, lifeless eyes.
Now, however, Nola's green eyes shone like emeralds. They reflected the flickering light of the candle placed between Parker and her, making her eyes twinkle in more than they have the past several days. He could stop staring at the happiness that danced in her eyes at that moment.
