Chapter Fifteen:
Nola watched as Parker raced around the small living room. At first, his mission was to make Nola as comfortable as he could while she sat on the couch. He placed a mountain of pillows around her and brought every blanket he had in the house to her. He then proceeded to get her a glass of water, tea, and milk, not knowing which one she'd want and to caught up in his thoughts to ask her. He then got all the movies out from under the television and laid them out on the coffee table.
"Are you comfortable? Do you need anything? Are you-"
"I'm fine ... Parker," Nola muttered. She was slightly humored by Parker but didn't want to show it. Ever since she had been released from the hospital, he had done everything in his power to make sure she did as little as possible. She was grateful that he was caring for her, but she feared, in a selfish way, that he would soon stop. After all, she was damaged and sooner or later he was going to realize that. With that being said, he would likely kick her out - leaving her defenseless against Mitch.
"What's wrong?" Parker asked, noticing the way Nola was slowly growing sadder and sadder as time passed. He didn't like the way her eyes were glossing over, showing she was on the verge of crying. His heart panged at the sight of Nola being wrapped up in depressing thoughts that were likely to do with her ex-boyfriend.
Walking over to the couch, Parker sat down next to Nola. He was happy she didn't flinch or move away. But, he knew that was probably because she was so deep in thought that she probably didn't notice him. He wondered what he could do to distract her or even, what he hoped for the most, get her to open up to him.
It had been a week and a half since the Mitch situation went down at the hospital and ever since then Parker has noticed Nola's more than normal grimy mood. He has asked her what's wrong, even though he knew the answer. Her reply would always be a small smile that didn't reach her eyes, followed by a simple: 'nothing'.
It killed him that she didn't trust him enough to talk but at the same time he understood her hesitation. Parker just only hoped that she would soon see that he was nothing like Mitch and was going to stay by her side and protect her for as long as she would let him.
Deciding not to ask 'what's wrong' again, he sighed and focused fully on Nola. "What movie do you want to watch?" He asked in a slightly louder than normal tone, knowing that was the only way to get her on a different train of thought.
Nola snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Parker with confusion. "Huh?" She questioned but then bit the inside of her cheek. She had questioned him. Exhaling, she reassured herself that that was okay to do. However, it didn't stop the memories of her questioning Mitch to come flooding into her thoughts.
Parker knew he had a small window to bring her back to the surface of reality before she went back into zoning off. "What movie do you want to watch?" He motioned to the collection before them on the table.
Nola glanced at the coffee table to see that it was filled with all kinds of movies. She noticed that he had a movie for pretty much every genre. Turning her head, she locked eyes with Parker. "What movie would you like to watch?"
"I'm up for any movie you want to watch," He replied, knowing that she only asked him because that was what she was programmed say in response. Parker, on the other hand, was not in the business of feeding into how she was taught to respond to questions. Instead, he wanted to show her, in as many ways as he could, that she was free to do whatever the hell she wanted - and he would follow, not the other way around.
