Brett found Marc standing in a business suit in front of a tall glass office building. He kept running a hand through his short hair, obviously still not used to the change in length. Brett exhaled glad he was okay, but now wondered if Simon was the one in the hospital.
“What’s up?” She asked.
He pointed up to the building, and ran a hand through his hair again. “I was going in there.”
“Okay, why?”
“For a job interview.”
“Marc!”, Brett screamed relieved she wasn’t waiting for someone to die, “That’s great, did you get the job, I didn’t know you went to med-school?”
“I went to med-school a while ago and passed all the exams, thinking I could make up for my father’s cheated life by saving others. But now I can’t go in, I’m too anxious.” He said squatting down to sit on the floor. Brett sat down with him, and the two of them sat together in the middle of the sidewalk. A couple of months ago, Brett would have called them freaks.
“What are you anxious about?”
“I’ve been studying again, but what if they don’t want me. What if I don’t get hired? I didn’t tell my mom or Simon because I didn’t want them badgering me with questions incase I didn’t get the job. So I didn’t know who else to call.” He said glancing up at Brett. She noted a tinge of worry in his eyes, and was glad to see any emotion at all.
Ever since the day Brett had met Kelly and had come back to Simon’s house, she and Marc had grown closer. She understood what he felt whenever she thought about Aunt Kelly’s words, and understood how thoughts could overwhelm one to the point of death.
“Shake my hand.” She ordered stretching her hand out. Simon obeyed, and gave her a firm handshake.
“You’ve got this Mr. Liel. You’ll have an office up there in no time, common I’m not letting you chicken out.” Brett said pulling Marc by the sleeve. He followed hesitantly, and almost walked away when they reached the interviewer door.
“I’ll be waiting here the whole time.” Brett said smiling. She gave Marc a small push, and he knocked on the door of a meeting room. An old man with graying hair and a warm smile answered, and Brett gave Marc two thumbs up.
As the interview progressed, Brett paced the room like a maniac. The receptionist eyed her wearily for a few minutes, and tried to get Brett to sit down, but gave up after the fifth time. Finally, Brett decided she’d better find something to occupy her time. She headed down stairs to buy some coffee, and tried to distract herself with a crossword puzzle. Only she lost track of time, and was surprised to see a smiling Marc standing in front of her. More than surprised actually, Brett was so shocked she almost choked on her coffee. Marc was smiling! And as she’d suspected months ago, he had a wonderful set of dimples to go along with it. As fast as the smile had appeared, it disappeared again, but there was still a sign of happiness in his eyes.
“I got the job.” He said as if it was a regular occurrence. Bret bolted up and pulled him into a tight hug, “I can’t believe it! Do I call you doctor Marc now or something?”
Marc laughed, “No I don’t have a Ph.D. or anything, I’m just going to be the doctor’s assistant for a while.”
“Aren’t you going to tell Simon, or your mom?”
“Of course, of course.” Marc said taking out his phone. The two of the them walked out of the hospital side by side, Marc on the phone, and Brett sipping her coffee. Marc thanked Brett and ruffled her hair like an older brother would to a kid sister. They said their goodbyes, and went on their way to their respective homes.
