In the morning, Brett rolled over to find the bed empty. She pushed her hair back from her head, and looked down at her damp jacket. Deciding she’d catch a cold wearing the drenched thing, she stole clothes from Jason’s’ wardrobe and headed down stairs. Brett was surprised he wasn’t in the kitchen, or in any of the rooms as a matter of fact. Only when she finally looked in the garage, and discovered Jason’s car wasn’t there, did Brett decide she ought to leave.
Her walk home was long, and it gave her plenty of time to think about what excuse she would use for staying out all-night and coming back in a strange boys clothes. Actually, the strange boy’s clothes would be odd. After buying a new outfit, and a duffle bag filled with her damp clothes did Brett continue the walk to her house. Upon opening the door her mother turned around furious, but not at Brett.
“You better thank God your sister came back safely,” Her mother said pointing and angry finger at Blake, “I have no idea what you were thinking dropping her off in the middle of the road.”
“Mom she deserved it.” Blake said rolling her eyes. Brett cocked an eyebrow towards her sister, wondering if she had spilled the beans.
“Brett, baby, are you okay? You must be freezing, with the storm last night, where did you stay?” her mother inquired wrapping Brett into a hug.
“With Jesse.”
“You did? But I called her last night asking if she had seen you?” she asked pulling out of the hug.
“I told her to lie. I was still mad.”
“As you had every right to be! When Blake came home saying she’d left you in the middle of the road, I almost had a heart attack. I mean I understand her wedding is this Saturday, and her nerves must be frayed, but that doesn’t giver her a right to dump you in the street!” Brett’s mother said heading to the kitchen, “Sit down! You must be starving.”
Brett sat down stiffly across from Blake. Her sister glared at her angrily, but Brett ignored the look to ask a question.
“You didn’t tell?” Brett whispered low.
“No. I want the mess to blow up in your face.” Blake said viciously.
“Oh.” Brett tapped her foot awkwardly, “so you don’t plan on telling?”
“Listen Brett, I want you to feel the pain your eventually going to bring these two boys. So I’m not going to tell, ever. But your secret will come out, and just know when it does, I had nothing to do with it.” Blake said getting out of her seat. Brett watched her walk away, and ate the meal her mother prepared for her filled with guilt. Her actions from last night were haunting her. She’d cheated on Simon in the worst way possible, how could she even look at him anymore?
Not feeling well, Brett finished her meal and headed upstairs to her room. Opening the door to her bathroom, she locked herself inside her temporary safe haven. She filled the bathtub with bubbles and flower petals, and felt guilty for even indulging in such pleasures. She should be burning in the deepest pits of hell right now. Brett submerged her head under the water, and seriously considered never coming up again.
Tomorrow was school, and she’d have to see both Jason and Simon in the same building. She could see Simon, excited and happy to see her, and she began to cry again. The warm tears from her eyes, mixed with the cooling water from the tub, and Brett tried to gulp in as much water as possible. Blake was right, the truth was definitely going to come out sometime soon. And Brett didn’t want to be there for when it did.
Holding the water in her mouth, Brett felt her head going fuzzy. The corners of her vision began to turn white, and soon black spots began to cloud her vision. Who would really care if she was gone anyway? Brett knew it was a selfish way to think, and was suddenly reminded of Marc. Brett’s body shot up out of the water, and she began to inhale roughly. Coughing a little, Brett leaned back on the tub and tried to ignore her little suicide attempt. It meant nothing, her life was still perfect on the outside, and she would continue to pretend it was so.
