The day went by slow. Since the incident with Dean and his father, Cas wasn't given any more tasks to do, so he wandered around the office building aimlessly.
He had found a coffee machine and had asked Dean if he wanted a cup. He grumbled a yes in response. Cas got him his coffee and then left the office right afterwards in silence.
He would walk into random people's offices and ask if they'd like any coffee and soon enough he knew most people's names on Dean's floor and their preferred way of drinking coffee.
By the end of the day he was exhausted from walking around getting coffee for everybody, but at least he had done something that seemed useful, in a sense of the word.
At 5:00, Cas knocked on Dean's office door. Dean said to come in.
"Shut the door behind you." Dean didn't look up from his computer.
Cas closed the door and stood awkwardly in the middle of the room. This was weird and awkward and they both felt it.
He didn't know what to say, but knew he had to say something, so he spoke up." I'm sorry about your father."
Dean stopped typing and looked up at Cas. "Don't be sorry. You did nothing."
"Yeah, but he shouldn't have treated you like that, just because your gay. It's not fair of him to do that."
"Doesn't matter. He doesn't see it that way and it's not like he's going to change his mind." Dean replied, staring blankly at Cas.
Cas pushed his hands in the pockets of his trench coat. "It does matter, Dean. Nobody should be treated like that just because of their sexual orientation. It's not right."
"My father doesn't care about what I think or feel. All he cares about is what he thinks is right."Dean looked angry. "He thinks it's a sin for me to love men instead of women. He's told me that to my face." He shook his head. "He's never going to change his mind, and I'm just going to have to except that because there's nothing I can do."
Cas walked to Dean's desk and laid his hands lightly on the table. "Well don't change yourself because your father tells you to. Because this is your life not his. You deserve to be happy."
Dean nodded. "Thanks, Cas. Sorry about, you know, being distant today. It's your first day and I didn't exactly make it easy for you."
Castiel shrugged. "That's fine. I became a barista for everybody on this floor. I now know that Hannah likes her's with extra milk, Anna prefers her's with a packet of sugar and doesn't like it hot but warm."
Dean laughed. "I think I should call you coffee boy from now on." He smiled up at Cas, a warm look on his face.
Cas stood up straight and narrowed his eyes at Dean. "Why're you looking at me like that?"
"Like what?"
"I don't know--your just looking at me like I just bought you a puppy."
Dean shrugged and stood up. "Well your day is over, so you should go now."
"That's it? It's only 5:00."
Dean glanced at his watch. "5:30." He raised his eyebrow. "It's your first day and you already worked overtime."
"Maybe I just like it here."
Dean looked at him like he didn't believe a word he was saying. "A boring office like this? I don't believe you."
"Well I did go to Harvard, meaning I'm the biggest nerd you've probably talked to today."
Dean picked up a pile of papers and placed them neatly into his briefcase. He closed the hatch and walked around his desk and put his hand on Cas's shoulder.
Cas looked over at him. He was unsure what the warm feeling traveling through him was.
"How about I walk you out?" He said.
Cas smiled. "Sure."
