Madelyn's POV

Staring out the window I see him. His sandy blonde hair waves as the wind blows through it. His big blue eyes are visible from meters away. His navy blue jeans have slipped lower than they should be and his white bonds undies were visible above the waist of his pants. Should I even be looking? Crap! He's seen me! Act cool Maddy, Act cool. I raise my left hand and give him a short wave, no doubt he waves back. Ben Shoreline is the guy all the girls dream about. He's the dreamy guy girls would do anything for. The guy that wouldn't hesitate to make good girls go bad. But not me. Yeah, okay I agree he is attractive but it all is pulled to an abrupt stop when he opens his mouth. Of course most girls would quickly overlook that detail but not me. A guy's personality is what makes him attractive. Well to me anyway. I guess you could say I am in the 'popular crowd' at school. To be honest I don't even know how I got in there in the first place. Maybe I just wore the right dress or done my hair differently one day and impressed them. It has its up-sides like having people look up to you, but then I think about it and it isn't for a good reason anyway. Girls look up to me as an inspiration for the way they get dressed in the morning. I think it shouldn't even matter what you wear. Will it affect how well you study? Will it affect how you can read? No. But as long as I am in the 'popular crowd' that's the way people look at me.

"Maddy! Honey, have you fed Albert?" Mum yells from the kitchen. Albert is our dog, he is a Shiatsu and almost on his last legs.

"I'm coming!" I yell back. I closed the blind and tore my eyes from Ben, dunking balls in his hoop in his backyard. I end up at the fridge and ransack through it until I find what I'm looking for. I snatch the bowl of rice and veggies smothered in gravy. The vet said it would help Albert stay healthy while he lives out the rest of his days. "Here you go boy," I whisper gently ruffling up the hair on the top of his head. The steam from Albert's food wafts to my nose. I feel my stomach rumble, that smells so nice. God I must me hungrier than I thought.

"How long until dinner?" I ask as mum stirs a pot over the stove. I climb back up the stairs to continue with my English assignment.

"About 15 minutes!" Mum screeches a little too loud. Looks like I'll be up late, I figure looking down at the paper spread over my desk. I can feel the stress wrinkles forming on my forehead. I'm not dumb, but I've never topped the class in any subject. That was my new year's resolution this year. Grabbing the corner of the sheet of paper outlining the conditions of the assignment I realise it is caught under my laptop. Not thinking things through, I tug harder at the paper.

"Noo!" I squeal.

"What's happened?" Mum yells from the kitchen in alarm.

"Nothing, its okay," I say soon realising my role of sticky tape has run out. "Mum! Do you have any sticky tape?"

"Sure darl, in my study!" Mum yells and I freeze. No one ever goes into Mum's study. She's a writer and it's kind of like her peaceful temple. I tip toe into the study not that I am hiding from anyone. There is more paper on her desk then I have ever seen in my life. I am so nervous I can feel my palms sweating bullets.

"Ugh," I wipe my hands on my jeans and continue on my mission. I quickly grab the tape and bolt out of there but I spin around after hearing a frightening 'thud'. "Crap!" I whisper bending down to shuffle the papers together. I read a piece of paper 'Never ending love story' Aw this must be what Mum's working on. I gaze over the first few lines and wish I could just sit there and read the whole thing, but I'm scared I'll get caught and I know Mum doesn't like sharing her stories until they are completely finished so I finish shuffling the papers together and place them on the desk but something catches my eye.

"Oh God!" I whisper to myself as I read an ALERT letter. We are in so much debt. How could this have happened? I keep scanning over the letter and read that if we don't pay off the debt these people are going to keep our insurance. I thought mum gave them her great grandmother's pearl necklace for insurance. "Oh please no!"
