Madelyn’s POV

“STOP RIGHT THERE!” Came a stern voice from the front of the room. Everyone looked up from their books and stared. Second period had begun about twenty minutes ago and Harry and I weren’t the stealthiest people when it came to sneaking in late. We spun around slowly. Mrs Leal’s eyes were cold and staring right into mine. I had been caught multiple times passing notes and I was beginning to think she had it out for me.

“Maddy was with me miss,” Harry said defending me.

“Why are you so late for school?” She asked her voice cold and rusty.

“My mother, she was taken to hospital,” Harry said I could hear the sadness and uncertainty in his voice.

“Oh, Uh sit down,” She was shocked and her tone settled as she told us to take a seat.

“Thank you Miss,” Harry said as he took a seat next to me.

“Are you alright?” I asked him hoping these words weren’t going to cut his tears loose.

“Fine,” he lied.

“Madelyn Kingsley, your Math homework?” asked Mrs Leal. She was married but didn’t have any kids. She was around 30 and had a keen eye for some of her male students. People avoided her at all costs.

“Sure Miss,” I said standing up to take my few sheets of homework to her.

“Harry Moore?” She yelled out as I handed her my homework.

“Thank you,” She said as we both walked back to our desk at the back of the room.

“She’s so strange,” Harry said whispering in my left ear.

“Yeah, watch out. She has a ‘thing’ for almost every guy in Southmont!” She gasped and sunk lower in his chair.

“Good God!” he said earning attention from Mrs Leal, “Oh Crap,” He whispered.

“This’ll be good!” Came a mocking voice from out right, Tim Williams and Ben Shoreline.

“Ignore them,” I whisper as Mrs Leal approaches us.

“Do you pair have something to share with the rest of us?” She screeched. Her breath smelt of egg. Ugh

“No Miss,” Harry said almost too politely.

“Well what were you talking about?” She asked. God why did people have to be so bloody nosey. People have a right to their privacy. I felt my face flush hot and tried to control my anger.

“No Miss, nothing important,” He said seeming completely in control of his emotions.

“And you Miss Kingsley?” She looked me in the eye and I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.

“Nothing,” Is all I say, if I say anything else I would of found myself in detention, for the rest of my life.

“No talking in my class!” She screams as she turns to a pair of girls giggling in the corner. She smacks her meter ruler on their desk and the girls yelp in fear. The class is quiet now, you could hear a pin drop.

“Whose phone is that?” She squeals from the board. Everyone chases the sound and all eyes are on me and Harry.

“This is so not my day,” Harry said reaching for his mobile, he gasps, “It’s Mum, sorry Miss I’m going to take this,” Harry said leaving the room giving Mrs Leal no options.

I see his face through the window embedded in the door. He isn’t happy, he’s crying. I can see the tears streaming down his face as he hangs up and Mr Utah takes him over the shoulder and shifts him to the office I guess.

The bell for recess rang as Mr Utah walked in the room, “Everyone stay seated,” I felt the tears welling up in my eyes as I thought of what the possibilities could be from the phone call Harry received. “Miss Kingsley, could you come with me please?” He said not giving me much choice but if I’m on my way to see Harry, I don’t need one. “It’s Harry, his mother is pregnant and...” I cut him off.

“Yeah, I know. I was with him. That’s why we were late.” I was worried now.

“There is some bad news,” He said, “The baby...” I cut him off again and raced to Harry’s side as soon as I saw him.

“Harry...” I said holding him close.

“It’s Bella, she’s gone,” He said referring to his unborn baby sister. He cried over my shoulder and I could see Mr Utah and the office ladies tearing up too.

“Oh Harry,” I said unsure of the right words to say. Nothing I said was going to fix the situation and all I could do was be there for him.

“If only she could of held on for a couple more weeks, she was so close,” He whispered the hurt stabbing him in the gut.

“She is in a better place now,” I say.

“But she wasn’t in a bad place to start with,” he cried even harder and we sat for about an hour, daydreaming.

“Come on,” I said helping his limp body into my Jag. “I’ll take you home.” By now it was lunch and the kids gave us concerning looks as I drove away from school.

“Thanks for this,” He said through sobs. He took a deep breath and calmed down a little. I think it is more shock now.

“Do you want to go and see your Mum?” I ask wondering whether she’d be up for visitors, but it was her son.

“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea,” A small smile showed itself but quickly faded.

“Don’t let this destroy you,” I say hoping he keeps it together.

“I know, It’s not fair on Mum if I lose it too,” He says not looking me in the eyes.

“Yeah,” I say as I pull into the car park at the hospital.

“Here we are,” He says stepping away from my truck.

“You alright?” I ask, he smiles and I take his tear stained hand. The rain is drizzling miserably.
