ACT 22

Dinner at the Du Couteau household is just like any other dinners out there. Cassiopeia usually told them various stories about her day and sometimes a few gossip here and there, and whenever Talon's day is as eventful as hers, he would usually share a story or two about it.

Now that those two things have been done, Marcus Du Couteau, the patriarch of the Du Couteau clan, turned his attention to his eldest daughter, silently waiting for her to shoot out a bunch of teasing remarks at her siblings' stories. Much to his surprise, Katarina remained quiet. She merely continued eating her meal in complete silence.

Katarina had been like this for a week now, and honestly, her father is starting to worry about her. Marcus may act tough and cold, but he cares deeply for his children.

He cleared his throat and Cassiopeia and Talon instantly quieted down and listened intently, knowing their father is about to speak.

"Katarina, what about you?"

"What about me?" Katarina spoke absently, eating a small piece of meat in her mouth.

"Any news you might want to tell me about?"

"None whatsoever."

Cassiopeia and Talon exchanged glances before they continued eating their food as silently as Katarina was doing a second earlier. Marcus took notice of their behaviours and Katarina's absence of mind. He internally decided to inquire about what he had seen at the television.

"When do I get to meet this Avarosa girl, then?"

The two froze from their seats momentarily while Katarina abruptly went rigid. As expected, it didn't go unnoticed by the General.

"Never."

"Why so? Are you afraid that I might scare her off?"

Cassiopeia sent him a look that clearly told him to drop the subject, but he would have none of it. He wants to know what's bothering his daughter, and he wants to know now.

"No,"

Ignoring the way Katarina practically growled at him, he continued.

"Then why can't I meet her?"

Katarina's fork and knife dropped and clattered to her plate loudly. She abruptly pushed her chair back and stood up from her seat, glaring at their father.

"It's because we're not together anymore."

Katarina turned away and left the dining room, stomping as she did so. The silence took over before they heard the loud slam of the door of Katarina's bedroom. Marcus' gaze landed on his two children.

"What happened?"

"They broke up." They answered in unison.

"What did the Avarosa do?"

Cassiopeia sighed. "As much as we want Ashe to be the one responsible for their breakup, we have to accept that Katarina is also involved in the reason why they broke up."

"Are you actually blaming your sister?"

Talon sighed, louder than needed. "Father, please. This isn't really yours to deal with. If I were you, I would let her think this through alone and let her handle this by herself."

"She's not a little girl anymore, Father." Cassiopeia supported before she gave their father a look. "Also, before you blame anyone, make sure you're not barking at the wrong tree."

Ashe sat on the couch, her mind wandering and not really registering the words Sejuani told her. Her youngest cousin sat at her left and right now, Volibear could sense her depression. Volibear whimpered quietly, nudging and nuzzling her ankle.
