Chapter Fourteen

It appears as though my Salvatore babysitting adventure isn't over yet.

Now that he thinks Elena is gone, I'm basically obligated to watch over Damon and make sure he doesn't do anything irrational. I am, however, allowing him to kill a few people here and there, as long as he covers up his tracks.

I sat criss-cross on the side of the road, while Damon laid in the middle, hoping for his next victim to come speeding our way.

"How much longer.." I groaned, before he held a finger to his lips, and headlights approached from a distance.

The car got close within a matter of seconds, nearly hitting Damon before the tires screeched and he blared his horn, coming to a stop. Damon sat upright as the driver got out, racing over to him.

"Whoa- You okay, man?" the driver knelt beside Damon,

A second of silence passed before Damon sighed, raising his left arm. "Mind giving me a hand?"

The driver politely did as requested. "What are you doing out here?" he pondered.

"I don't know. I thought it would make me feel better." Damon admitted, to which I narrowed my eyes.

"Okay. Should I call someone or.." the stranger trailed off,

"What's your name?" Damon questioned.

"It's Cooper." the man replied.

"Cooper, you ever done something so unspeakably horrific you couldn't even look yourself in the mirror? Like, it literally makes you ill to see your own reflection?" Damon placed a hand on Cooper's shoulder, staring him in the eyes. "And be honest now."

"I ran over my girlfriend's cat a couple months ago and didn't tell her. Even though it was an accident, I threw the body in a supermarket dumpster." Cooper bluntly responded, causing my face to contort in disgust.

"I killed the love of my life. Burned her alive while she was asleep. I also beat one of her best friends till he was unconscious and left him for dead, if we're keeping score." Damon lightly chuckled, as Cooper's face fell.

"I think I'm just gonna go." Cooper tried walking away, before Damon grabbed his arm.

"Actually, we could use a ride." Damon widely smiled.

"'We?'" Cooper questioned.

I sighed, getting up from my spot on the pavement as I waltzed over to the duo. "Hi, I'm Cassidy." I smiled, before I pointed back to Cooper's car.

I opened the door to the backseat, knowing that Damon would want shotgun.

The two boys followed, Cooper getting in the drivers seat, turning on the ignition, and taking off.

"So, Cooper-" I started, leaning forward until I was cut off by Damon.

"I thought Elena had changed me. I thought she made me a better man, but..I was wrong. I was so wrong. It was always gonna end up this way. With me destroying her." Damon sulked, causing me to roll my eyes. "That's what my whole tour of duty in the Phoenix Stone taught me is that I'm permanently damaged goods. You ever feel that way, Cooper?"

"Not really." Cooper shook his head, as I rose my eyebrows and shrugged from the backseat.

"Well, you're lucky." Damon chirped, "Coop, I'm gonna kill you now."

"Excuse me?" Cooper's eyebrows furrowed as his eyes widened.

"Oh, it's nothing personal. I'm hungry, you're food. Think of it as a stop at a drive-thru window." Damon explained, "You know, you'll be afraid, I won't care. Honestly, I can't imagine caring about anyone ever again. Not a single solitary soul."
