Nancy had tried using the same tone as Stella but it didn’t seem to have the same effect. Nancy lacked the threatening like Stella had. It didn’t seem like Nancy could pull any weight when it came to our social status, sure she could be mean to us but who cared. There was something in the air that didn’t feel right. Sandra cleared her voice taking a step in front of Nancy. It was clear that there was only one second place and it didn’t belong to Nancy.
“Well.” Sandra clapped her hands getting all our attentions that Nancy had lost—“There is a small catch. You can not duplicate any number that is already up on the wall. Frankly, it is every woman for herself and it is more than okay to cut a few throats along the way. Now any girl can get a guys phone usually because it is a fact. It isn’t just girls how to it either. So you need to be interesting and flirty enough to get their real numbers.” I listened carefully to everything that Sandra said. She has been slowly giving me hints along the way and hopefully she had a hidden clue within her words.
She was helpful but even I knew she couldn’t blatantly tell me the answers. There was a strange lost friendship between us that was slowly rising to the surface but it was also going to carry up items from the bottom of the ocean. When are friendship was over I threw all my secrets into a bag, shoved it with rocks and tossed it into the ocean. Best friends have secrets and she knew all of mine. After we drifted I always wondered if everything I ever told her was really a secret anymore.
“The quicker you get this challenge done the quicker you can start your next one,” She said leaving her sentence open.
Everyone scattered attempting to relocate their dates. Mimi and I headed towards the washroom’s hoping to beat the rush. The clothes were still tight in the fist of my hand while we both got into the stalls to change. I squished into the four walls, my elbows, knee and head banging against the blue doors at least once. My skirt was tight and black falling about mid thigh. The shirt was lace all down the back showing my bra.
“Jesus.” A loud bang came from the stall next to me. Mimi cursed smacking herself against the hard surface as well. I laughed at our struggle. When I emerged I finally took a good look in the mirror. There was a sense of confidence in the girl looking back at myself. The hair, the clothes and the look on my face said it all.
“Damn girl, you look hot,” Jordan busted out wearing something that looked equally strange. The red that she was wearing brought out the color of her hair well.
“Thanks.” The confidence in me was rising as Mimi joined our group. Jordan and Mimi gave each other introductions. Our group grew even larger when we walked out seeing Dee, Adam, Wayne and Carter all hanging around together at the table.
I couldn’t help but think of how our strange group was only getting larger and respectively stranger. Each person would have never come into contact with each other if it wasn’t for the strange interconnections between them. Adam and Dee were talking while Carter stared at his phone some more. Mimi rushed over to Wayne excited to get his number on the wall. I assumed now would be a great time to start collecting the phone numbers.
