Asami
“Where’s Varrick? We were supposed to close the deal an hour ago,” I comment to no one in particular. There isn’t anyone else in the room beside my ex-boyfriend, Mako, and his little brother, Bolin. Mako is pacing around the room, also waiting for the billionaire businessman. Mako’s messy dark hair is exceptionally out of place today, seeming to match his mood. His orange eyes are glancing around the room.
“Would you relax? This place is great!” Bolin says. He’s only about a year younger than Mako, and yet their personalities are complete opposite. Where Mako is serious and responsible, Bolin is fun and loves to goof off. He’s childish at times, but the whole look just works for him. He even has the puppy dog eyes to match. “And the best part about it, Eska doesn’t know I’m here!”
Ah Eska, Bolin’s current girlfriend. I wasn’t sure he’d ever get over Mako being with the last love of his life, Korra. She took Mako from me just like Mako took her from Bolin. Eska and Bolin have only being dating (if you would call it that) for a short time, since we got to the Southern Water Tribe. If you ask me, she’s way too uptight for Bolin, and she could really use a makeover. She also seems pretty clingy. This is the first time I’ve seen her and Bolin apart.
As if on cue, Eska and her brother, Desna, burst through the door. It makes us all jump. The twins are dressed in identical robes, which aren’t doing much for either of them. I realize this is the first time I’ve seen Desna up close. I had only seen him from afar and heard stories about him from Bolin. From his point of view, Desna was just a quieter version of Eska.
“We search for Varrick. Our father wishes him to stand trial,” the boy explains. Desna’s father is the chief of the Northern Water Tribe, leaving him with a lot of power, even in the South.
“What did he do?” I demand. In the few weeks I’ve known Varrick, I could never see him doing anything wrong. He’s like Bolin, always good-natured. Desna only narrows his eyes at me.
“He is a traitor to the Water Tribe, along with our aunt and uncle,” Eska says.
“What?” I ask. Their aunt and uncle were also Korra’s parents. Korra may have taken my boyfriend a few months ago, but she was still the best girl friend I had. If her family was in trouble, she might need our help.
“Korra’s parents were arrested?” Mako asks in disbelief.
“Yes, you powers of deduction are impressive,” Desna says. Was that sarcasm? And here I thought he was all work and no fun. I hold back a laugh because of how mad I am about this news.
“Yeah,” Bolin smirks, “he’s a cop.” Someone has to teach that boy when to shut up.
The twins ignore him as someone reports to them. “Desna, let us continue our search elsewhere.” The twins turn to leave, but Eska stops. “Boyfriend, bow to me when I exit!”
“Yes, yes, my sweet… koala… otter,” Bolin mumbles into the floor. I’m glad I’m not dating her.
Desna
“Desna, let us continue our search elsewhere,” my twin sister says to me. We just finished searching through Varrick’s office and talking with Mako, Bolin and their friend Asami. This is my first time meeting the young entrepreneur, and I must say she is very interesting. She is certainly very outspoken compared to other people I’m used to.
I didn’t spend much time around girls my age besides Eska. Were they all this outspoken? I was sure my cousin, Korra was, but she was the Avatar. That duty comes with some grounds to argue. Asami was different in a way. She didn’t fight for no reason, and she seemed to keep her ideals closed up. What was she thinking?
“Come, Desna, we have the entire facility to search before we return to Father,” Eska reminds me, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“Yes, let us continue,” I agree, my eyes wavering on the door for another second. I forced myself to look away, remembering how upset Father gets when we’re late. Being the chief of the Northern Water Tribe left him to be very busy, and he only had so much time for his children. That left Eska and me on our own for the most part, continuously doing whatever it took to impress Father. If finding Varrick is what it will take now, I know we’ll both do it.
Another event cuts down our time as well. The trial for our uncle and the rest of the men of the tribe will start in a few hours, whether we bring Varrick or not.
Father had been talking all week about the importance of this event, but I couldn’t understand why. Surely he would like to see the men who tried to attack him in jail, but his own brother? Father had had several meetings with the judge of the trial, Judge Hotak. He insisted that they all be private. I seem to be the only one even vaguely questioning it. Eska, anyway, doesn’t seem to think it means anything. Perhaps I should just take her word for it and trust my father….
We searched practically the entire Southern Water Tribe, but Varrick was nowhere to be found.
“We could not find Varrick,” my sister reports to my father, with me by her side.
“Never mind about him. The trial starts in an hour. I want you both ready,” he tells us. He doesn’t look very nervous, as he had the rest of the week. He’s already in dressed in his finest robes. I wonder what his rush is. “I’m leaving now. I expect both of you to be not a minute late.”
“Yes, Father,” I say for the both of us. We head to our chambers as Father heads toward the door. I swear I see a grin flash on his face as he shuts the door behind him. I give Eska a look, but she doesn’t seem to have noticed anything.
“I want to get to the trial early to find my little turtle duck,” she tells me as if nothing had happened. The turtle duck that she speaks of is her newest companion, Bolin. He is a charming young man, good friends with the Avatar. He was once located in Republic City, but according to Eska, he will now be joining us in the North. I cannot understand why Eska would want this. He is simply a peasant with no manners, but I suppose he is a good listener. Still, the entire ordeal seems a bit bland to me. She tells him to bow, he does. She tells him to carry her, he would. Where is the excitement in that type of relationship?
I express none of these thoughts to my sister. She, as always, would just tell me I’m being silly. About Father, about Bolin; it’s as if she thinks I know nothing.
We change into our court robes and arrive at the trial early.
“Can you see him, Desna?” Eska asks me, looking over the crowd.
“He is speaking with Judge Hotak,” I explain, thinking she’s talking of Father. That’s all I could think about since we left the palace. Why is that they’ve been speaking so often? Surely the judge has to prepare for this type of trial. I don’t understand why they just can’t speak after. Father doesn’t even seem to acknowledge our presence.
“Not him, Brother. Bolin,” she tells me, still looking out at the crowd.
“Oh.” How foolish of me, I think. “Perhaps he’s just late. You know the city folk.”
“I’ll have to teach him some real manners when we return to the North,” she comments to herself. I guess the plan to take him with us hasn’t changed at all. I was having trouble imagining my whole life with that child around.
We both continue to look through the crowd. I spot Asami sitting by herself in one of the pews. I wonder why Bolin isn’t with her. She seems to be sitting alone, nervously glancing around the room. Soon her glance stops on me, and I realize she’s staring at me. I suppose I was staring first. I quickly look away, back at Eska.
“There he is!” she reports, finding Bolin squeezing in next to Asami.
“The trial will now begin, “ Judge Hotak announced. Eska groans, but follows me to our seats as Father stands next to Korra and her partner, Mako. He has his hand firmly placed on her shoulder, making it obvious how nervous she must be. I’ve never had much taste for Korra, but I still don’t want anything to happen to her parents. All Father needs is another child to take care of.
