Desna

I hadn’t exactly thought of a plan as to how I would leave the South. My jet ski was somewhere at the bottom of the ocean, and I couldn’t exactly ask Father for another one. There were no boats coming in or leaving, and the blockade was still going on. That made my options very limited.

“Do you need something, sir?” one of the troops asks me. Even without my official robe, he most likely could tell my identity.

“No, I’m just looking around, thank you,” I explain. The troop nods and continues on his way. As soon as he’s out of sight, I crouch behind a pile of boxes. I don’t need anyone else seeing me.

I wait as swarms of people march by, all of them talking in official tones,

In between herds of people, I manage I make a jump for the water. I dive in, using waterbending to control the splash. I don’t come up for air until I’m half a mile out and I’m sure no one followed me. After my t-shirt is soaked through, I decide there’s no need to continue swimming, so I propel myself on a piece of ice.

The city was a day’s worth of traveling out, but I had time.

“Asami, here I come.”

Asami

Instead of spending the rest of the day thinking about Mako, or Desna, or Mako and Desna, or me and Mako, or Desna and me…. I decide to go visit Bolin on set.

He’s been acting in Varrick’s movers for the South and invited me to come down.

“Asami! Hey, what are you doing here?” Bolin asks. I find him hanging from some sort of contraption hanging to the roof.

“Varrick invited me to watch some filming,” I explain, then I take a look around, but Bolin’s the only one here. “Are you filming right now?”

“Right now? Nope, we’re uh… We’re at lunch,” he explains, still upside down.

“Asami!” I spin around to hear Mako’s voice. “There you are. Is Bolin around?”

“Up here!” Bolin calls. Mako looks up at him, but doesn’t say anything about it.

“Good, I’ve got something to tell you both,” Mako says. I can tell by the look in his eyes this is serious. Bolin manages to get down and joins us. “I found out whose been stealing from Future Industries,” he says. He pauses, glances around, then says, “Varrick.”

This hits me like a ton of bricks. Varrick? The only one who has ever helped my company? “He attacked his own ship?”

“Yes! It was a ploy. He wants Republic City to go to war, and he wants control of the businesses that stand profit the most from it. He already had all the shipping. All he needed was Future Industries.”

“Varrick helped save Future Industries. He’s my business partner, not an evil mastermind,” I remind Mako. Maybe he forgot about that, or the fact that I originally came to Varrick for help. There was no way he was planning this. “You seem stressed.”

“I am stressed!” Mako yells, annoyed with the both of us. I pull away at his harsh tone. What was wrong with him?

“See, this is why I had to move out,” Bolin says.

“You guys aren’t living together anymore?” I ask. Why wasn’t Mako telling me anything anymore? “Sounds like you’ve had a pretty busy week. Maybe you need to relax,” I suggest. I put my hand on Mako’s shoulder, hoping to calm him down.

“What a minute, are you two…dating again?” Bolin demands. I immediately pull my hand away and feel my cheeks turn red.

“Dating? No,” Mako says. So that’s how he feels…

“Korra just left a week ago!” Bolin reminds us.

Mako quickly changes the subject and continues to tell us why Varrick is evil. I’m hardly listening anymore. What does it matter?

“Let it go, Mako,” Bolin suggests, seeming to agree with me.

This only makes him yell in frustration. “No, I’m not going to let it go!” He storms off into the other direction without so much as a good bye.

“I’m gonna go, too,” I say, trying to keep my voice even. “Good luck.”
