The south was pretty much the same as I had left it last time, but I had to pretend to be concerned about its current state again. The others still didn’t know about my visit with Desna.

Desna.

I wonder if he’s all right as we make it to the South’s only hospital. It isn’t much compared to the ones in the city. It’s mostly just healers in an old hut taking care of the men.

Today it was full of Southern troops, the ones Tonraq led into battle. Many of them were badly injured, from both troops and spirits.

Tenzin had Jinora in his arms as he approached his mother. Jinora got trapped in the spirit world with Korra a week ago and her body wasn’t doing well, or so I’m told.

“Mom!” Korra calls to her mother, running to hug her. I glance away, not wanting to ruin the moment. “Where’s dad?”

“Unalaq wiped out the entire southern resistance and captured your father,” Senna explains. Her voice sounded shaky and scared.

“I’ll get him back,” Korra promises her.

After that, we start to talk strategy. We needed to get Korra through the spirit portal before Harmonic Convergence. If she didn’t get in by then, she wouldn’t be able to stop Vaatu, the spirit of chaos and darkness.

Bumi sprang into one of his war stories just as we were trying to make progress. “Enough of your ridiculous lies!” Tenzin shouts. “Can’t you see that the fate of the world and Jinora’s life depends on what we do here today?”

I was only half listening to Tenzin’s complaint. I still had Bumi’s story on my mind. “Hold on, maybe Bumi’s right,” I mutter, thinking of a plan inside my head. “Maybe we should attack from above.”

“What are you thinking?” Korra asks quickly.

“Mako, Bolin and I could use a plane to cause a distraction, and scatter some of the defenses. You, Tenzin, Bumi and Kya can fly into the spirit portal on Oogi when you see an opening,” I suggest. A few looks are exchanged before Korra answers.

“Let’s get moving.”

“Brother, I think it is time we speak with Father. This has gone on long enough,” Eska decides. Her upfront attitude is a bit alarming. She is usually never the one to suggest confronting Father. Perhaps the battle yesterday changed something in her.

I quickly agree, and we approach Father’s tent together. He is meditating, but opens his eyes when we come in.

“What are we still doing here, Father?” Eska asks.

“The invasion was completely successful and the Southern Tribe is under our control,” I remind him. “The spirit portals are open.” It seemed as though Father had accomplished everything he wanted in the South. Now he had all its power under his control.

“You’ve restored balance. Now we would like to go home.”

Father smiles at us. It sends chills down my back. “You don’t understand. Everything I’ve achieved so far will fall pale in comparison with what I’m about to accomplish,” he says simply.

“What else is there?” I ask, fearing my father’s plans a bit. He had caused so much destruction all ready. “The Water Tribe is united.”

“After today, there will be no more water tribe, no more nations of any kind.” I hold back a small gasp as my father continues. “The world is about to be transformed into something magnificent and new, and I will lead this glorious revolution. Now go outside and get the troops ready to defend the spirit portal.”

Eska only seems to catch the end of Father’s speech. “From whom?” she asks him. “We’ve beaten everyone.”

“The Avatar will be here soon. She has no choice,” he says simply. He sends us away, my mind spinning.

“Tell me he isn’t speaking of the dead Avatar,” I ask Eska.

She shakes her head. “Perhaps she is not dead.”

“Or perhaps Father has lost it!” I say, accidently raising my voice. “Eska, what is he planning? World domination?”

“I don’t know, Desna,” my sister says sharply. “But we will find out soon.”

“Eska, I think it is time to end this. Time to leave Father.”

“And do what? Become his enemy? Fall to him like the rest of the world soon will? If he is truly going to do this, I want to be on his side when he does. Regardless the cost,” she explains, her voice becoming raw.

I swallow, but don’t answer her. I knew she was right. Father may be crazy, but he was true to what he said. If a new world is what he wants, he will soon get it.

“Let us go tell the troops then,” I begin, but am cut off by a noise overhead. I look up wildly and spot both a flying bison and an aircraft flying overhead. On the wing of the aircraft is the Future Industries logo.

“Asami,” I whisper as Eska rushes to warn the troops.
