Asami
Mako looks at me, his eyes a bit unsure.
“Mako,” I beg, hoping he’ll listen, “I need your help. My mom is gone. My dad is in jail. Future Industries is all I have left of my family.” I look at Mako, thinking only one thing. He’s not Desna. Before, Desna was the only person I would say these things too. Now, in a desperate attempt to repair my company, I’m admitting my deepest thoughts to Mako of all people.
I sigh, knowing this is all in vain. Why would he help me when he had a great job, a great girlfriend?
“I want to help you,” he says finally, making my heart leap, “but this is more than a two person job.”
Just as Mako says this, Varrick makes his way ouside.
“First of all, we’d need a ship,” Mako tells me.
“You need a ship?” Varrick asks us. “I got a ship. I want in on whatever you’re talking about.”
Mako and I exchange a look. “The less you know the better,” I say.
“Perfect! I love not knowing things,” he says.
“Alright, I’m in. Let’s get these guys,” Mako agrees.
We spend the rest of the day getting the operation together. It’s a bigger job than I expected, but I have everything we need in my factory.
“The ship’s been loaded with the dummy crates. Let’s get this sting operation going,” I tell Mako.
“Not yet. We need extra manpower,” he tells me.
Korra is the first person to pop into my head. “How about Korra? No better manpower than the Avatar.”
Mako makes a face, and says, “Right, uh, Korra. She’s actually…out of town right now.” He fiddles with his fingers, looking nervous.
“Is everything alright with you two?” I ask, sensing some uneasiness. Mako’s eyes dart away from me.
“Yeah, yeah. Forget about Korra. I’ll go talk to Bolin,” he insists, running off before I can question him anymore. I wonder what I missed.
Desna
The silence between my sister and I is broken by the hum of the motor of a boat. I hear it before I see it, but I know it’s Korra the whole time.
“Sister, this is our last chance. Please,” I say. Her only reply is a sinister grin as Korra comes into view. I’m relieved to see that she’s alone on her small boat, but my relief only lasts a moment. Eska swings an arm upwards, causing the water beneath Korra’s boat to shoot up. Korra swerves the boat to dodge Esk’a attacks.
“You ruined my wedding!” Eska yells as she continues firing.
Korra simply turns around and throws a slash of water at our jet skis. I jump off with just a second to spare, and land on the water with ease. Don’t fight back, I keep telling myself. Korra is family, but more importantly she’s a friend to Asami.
Eska and I, waterbending the surface of the water, manage to catch up to Korra’s boat.
“No one steals my Bolin!” Eska continues yelling. She flings herself out of the water and breaks Korra’s boat in two. I hear her scream as her body flies underwater.
“Eska! What did you do?” I ask, not sure if Korra is going to come up.
Finally, she reemerges on a hurricane of water. The funnel keeps her up in the air as she continues to attack. Looking down on us, she starts shooting fire, and I have to use water to shield myself. I try to call out to Korra, but she’s hardly listening to either of us.
Eska manages to throw Korra’s balance, but she catches herself once again, this time with an air funnel. Finally, she builds up enough water to block our sight as she tries to get away. I exchange a look with Eska, who is staring at the water beneath her in awe. I look down too, and I can’t help hanging my jaw open.
Swimming past us, headed straight for Korra, is a pair of glowing green eyes. A gigantic spirit, bigger than anything I’ve ever seen, floats under us. Korra must not have seen it, because by the time I can see again, she’s finally putting her guard down.
We both stop, knowing that we will be defenseless against the spirit. Still, we watch with careful curiosity, wondering what Korra will do. I had only seen her take on a few spirits, but I knew she wasn’t half as talented as my father.
The spirit manages to come up from behind Korra with a screech. It flings its tentacles at her, sending her underwater again. This time she comes up swinging, with her eyes glowing in the most mysterious way.
“The Avatar State,” I say to myself, my eyes never leaving Korra. She manages to get a few rings of water around the spirit. For a moment, it seems to have calmed down. She’s done it, I think. This only lasts a moment, however, because the spirit comes back angrier than ever. With it’s huge, glowing jaw, it manages to…eat her.
I’m so shocked I need to take a look at Eska to makes sure she saw it too. What were we going to tell Father? Would he even believe it?
Eska turns to leave without another word, leaving me more lost than ever.
