Desna
My hands are trembling as I head back home. Back to where I’ll be alone again. It had only been three days, and yet I had more of a connection with Asami than I did with anyone else I had ever known. Now she was gone, and I was alone.
Eska hardly seemed to notice my mood, as she was having troubles of her own. “Desna! Bolin missed our wedding!” she yells, anger filling her eyes. She’s still wearing her wedding gown and headpiece.
“I’m…sorry?” I say, not even having the energy to think of a real response.
“Ugh, I’m going to kill him!” she shouts, just as Father walks in. Eska immediately shuts her mouth with one look at Father.
His robe is torn up, his skin cut up and beaten. “What happened?” I ask him, because Eska doesn’t seem to be saying anything.
“Korra,” he growls. If I weren’t in such a bad mood I might be more amused by this, Daddy’s favorite child disappointing him. “She sabotaged me, tried to free her father and wrecked my blockade!”
“You mean she escaped?” I ask. This is why Asami must have left. There was no way she could stay with my father acting like this.
“You mean she took my Bolin?!” Eska shouts. Father gives her an icy glare that makes her stop again.
“I’m going to my study. I have plans to make,” he says simply. I can tell that by the tone of his voice he’s telling us not to bother him. It was an order that we heard often.
He stomps away, muttering to himself.
“Eska, what do you think Father is going to plan?” I ask in a panic. What if he wanted to sabotage Korra, go after her friends? What about Asami?
“Hopefully kill the rat. I can’t believe she took my husband from me. She will pay,” my sister declares.
“Eska, be rational. Father wouldn’t do something like that to Korra, would he?”
Eska shrugs but gives a menacing grin. “We can only hope.”
Asami
The ride back to Republic City is a pretty dreary one. Well, besides taking out Northern ships, rescuing Korra’s father, and Varrick still wearing his platypus bear suit.
I’m pretty shocked when Mako is the one who addresses my mood.
“Asami, is everything okay?” he asks me.
“Uh, yeah it’s fine. I’m just…worried. About the company and everything,” I say. It’s not a total lie, since the company has hit a rock bottom since I left and Varrick has yet to do anything about it. It’s just not the thing that’s bumming me out right now.
Mako doesn’t pry about it, or even ask where I ran off to before we left. He simply comes over to me, and gives me a hug. “It’ll be okay. Varrick will help you out,” he says. I’m more surprised than anyone when he pulls away and my face is red hot. I was pretty sure I didn’t have any feelings left for Mako, and yet I was still blushing at the simplest things.
I quickly play it off. “Yeah, you’re probably right. I just don’t know what’s going to happen when I get back.” I’m not even sure what I’m talking about anymore.
“If you need anything, I’ll be here for you,” Mako says. He quickly adds, “We all will be.”
I smile at him anyway. “Thanks.”
After a little less than a day of sailing, we make it to Republic City. It’s just how I remember it, but it feels a little less like home. Chief Beifong is there to greet us when we get in, but I don’t have time to listen to her and Korra argue.
“I better go check on my factory,” I tell them, eager to get away. I head the factory building before even stopping at the mansion.
“Henry!” I greet my most faithful employee.
“Miss Sato, welcome back,” he says. I had hired Henry shortly after taking over the company. He oversees inventory and marketing. “I trust you’re visit to the South went well.”
“Yes, it was great. I met with Varrick, and he agreed to manage Future Industries shipping,” I announce.
“That’s great news,” Henry says.
“Did I miss anything while I was gone? Any new orders?” I ask.
He shakes his head sadly. “None.”
“Well, we have Varrick to fix that,” I tell him, knowing that Varrick can’t fix everything.
Desna
Eska was starting to worry me a bit. She refused to take off her wedding gown or fix her makeup, which was smudged across her face. I attempted to talk to her about it, but she just told me I wouldn’t understand.
Yes, because I know nothing about heartbreak.
Father didn’t address her about the issue, which bothered me more than anything. He was her father; this was his responsibility. Obviously no one informed him.
After a few days of strangers coming in and out of the palace and Father hardly leaving his study, he finally called us in to speak with him. I was a bit panicked about what Father was going to ask of us, while Eska had high hopes that it would involve hunting down Korra and getting Bolin back. Perhaps her wedding vale was digging into her scalp a little too hard.
“I need you two to go after the Avatar,” Father informs us without even saying hello. He hardly takes a second look at Eska, and his eyes simply dart past me. “She’s the only one who can open the Northern spirit portal.”
“But, Father, did you tell Korra-,” I begin, but I’m cut off.
“I told Korra what I thought she needed to hear,” he says simply. I heard some of the Northern men talking about the Northern portal. One of them had said something about Unalaq tricking Korra into thinking he could open it without her. Obviously this was not the case.
“I’ll find her. She stole my husband,” Eska states without giving it another thought. I, on the other hand, was in a panic. There was no way I could take Korra, especially if she was with Asami. What would she think of me then?
Father takes Eska’s response as answer for the both of us. “I need her alive,” he states. Was there even a question of whether we would take her a live or not? I glance at Eska, who looks annoyed at this request.
“Fine,” she says.
Father continues studying the map in front of him, and when he sees we’re still here, he looks annoyed. “Well, go get her!”
I hesitate, but follow Eska out the door.
“Sister, I know you think Korra’s stole Bolin from you, but don’t you think this is a bit rash?”
Eska only hears half of what I said. “Think? I know she took him! She deserves exactly what’s coming to her. Now come on, we have to get a move on!”
Eska is ready to head out the door that exact minute. “Aren’t you going to change?” I ask. She groans and stomps to her room, where she appears with a robe that matches mine. “Happy?”
I don’t answer, I only follow her out the door, still trying to persuade her not to do it.
