Asami

"And don't worry, Mako won’t be hearing about this from me," Varrick says with a wink.

I couldn't drag Desna out of there fast enough. When we finally make it to the street, I breathe a sigh of relief. "Sorry, I didn't think Varrick would be there today," I say quickly.

"That's fine. It's wasn't your fault," Desna says. "But what did he mean about not telling Mako?"

I feel myself swallow hard. This was it Asami, you'll have to tell him.

"Everyone seems to have this crazy idea that Mako and I are dating," I say with a forced laugh.

Desna raises his eyebrows. "And why would that be?"

I sigh and grab Desna's arm. I bring him over to a bench and we both sit down. "Alright, here's the thing. Mako agreed to help me with a sting operation that would help me discover who had been robbing my company." Desna nods hesitantly. "And to plan something like that, Mako and I were spending a lot of time together."

"But you and Bolin spend a lot of time together," he argues. "What's the difference?"

"Well, Mako and I.... used to date. Before he was going out with Korra," I explain. I see Desna expression turn hard, but I keep going. "This was like six months ago. And then he broke up with me to be with Korra."

"But you were still friends," he concludes.

"Yeah...and for a while I was still getting over him," I admit. "And then I met you, and it was like he never existed. But then you left...or I guess I left..."

"Asami," Desna beckons me to get back to the point.

"We went back to the city together, and I found out Mako and Korra broke up. After that, Mako started spending a lot of time with me, and he was acting really sweet again. I told myself it was just to help my company, but I couldn't get over the feeling that it might be something more."

"So everyone thinks you're going out because you practically are."

"No!" I argue. "It isn't like that! I mean, I guess there was a time when I thought it was, but then I found out he’s a jerk again. He only cares about himself.”

Desna’s expression seems to soften a bit again.

“And, there’s one more thing you should know. Before he started acting like a jerk again, I sort of kissed him.” I look down at my feet, not wanting to see Desna’s expression.

He doesn’t say anything for a while, just sits there. Finally, I look up. “Looking back on it, it really didn’t mean anything. Sure, we were spending time together, but I kept comparing him to you. And I found out, that he’s not you, and that no one ever will be.”

He sighs. “Look, we can’t change the past. And I can’t stay mad at you for doing it if you regret it.”

Shocked at his response, I quickly wrap my arms around his waist. “You’re the best, you know that?”

He chuckles and kisses my head. “I know.”
