Desna
"Close you eyes!” Asami tells me as she takes me hand. I glance at her one last time before closing my eyes. Her face is bright like a child’s as she leads me through the city.
“Where are we going?” I wonder.
“Do you remember when we were in the Water Tribe, and you said you had that special place where you would always get away to?” she asks, still walking forward.
“Yes.”
“Well, you’re about to go to my special place,” she explains.
I opened my eyes slowly, letting the landscape around me sink in. I had felt us walk up stairs at one point, but I didn’t realize we were so high up.
We were on the roof of a building, one that must’ve been on the outskirts of the city. To my left and right were the few final stretches of city before it broke off into a dense area of green.
I had seen only a handful of forests living in the artic. None of them were as pretty as the one before me. It was every shade of green imaginable with a tree line that stretched toward a gray blue sky.
I turn around and see that the city is indeed still there. Its gray colors are in sharp contrast to the greens that mirror it.
“It’s the prettiest spot in the whole city,” Asami says as a matter of factly.
“If you look really hard right on the outside of the trees, there’s a color that perfectly matches you eyes,” I tell her. Her cheeks turn pink as she smiles.
“Really?” she asks, but she doesn’t turn to look. She’s looking at me.
I can’t help but smile at her. “Yeah.” Then she giggles, as if there was a joke I missed. “What?” I wonder, trying to get inside her head.
“I was just thinking,” she begins, “if you’re going to kiss me, you better do it now. I have whole picnic I want to get to.”
I smile at her, feeling my heart beat race as it always did when my lips came close to hers. “Well, okay,” I say as my lips brush hers. She smiles under me and leans in some more.
Asami
Desna and I left the roof of the Future Industries warehouse once the sun went down. It was a little creepy up there without the sun, and the warehouse got dark fast.
“So what now?” Desna asks as we come back to my apartment.
I feel my heart drop as I remember that this is Desna’s last day here. Desna sees the tears stinging my eyes and he wraps me into a hug. “What’s wrong?”
I didn’t want to cry in front of Desna, but it was hard to help it. “I’ll just really miss you,” I whisper, my voice sounding distant.
“You know I’ll miss you too, but it’s not forever. That I promise.”
I nod into Desna, who was still hugging me. I didn’t have the heart or the want to have him let go of me. I loved the warmth of his body and the comfort no one else could give me.
I stayed with Desna for a while until it was too dark to see and my eyes were drooping.
“Asami,” he whispers into my hair. I look up at him in a daze. “You need to get to sleep.”
“I need you,” I remind him. That seems to make him smile.
“And you’ll have me some other time. But it’s sleep right now,” he says. I know there’s no fighting it, but before going to my room, I move my head upwards slightly and plant a light kiss on Desna’s lips.
“I’ll be waiting for you,” I say, forcing a smile.
His lips curl at the edges. “Me too, but not nearly as patiently.”
Without saying good bye, I headed off into my room. As soon as I got there I found that I was wide-awake and another wave of sadness hit me. I knew it was going to be a long night.
