I was only out the door a few seconds when I felt myself start to break down. How could I have been so stupid? The way Mako said we weren't dating, I could tell he didn't even look at me like that anymore. It's like the kiss was nothing.

I plop down on the nearest bench and let the tears run down my eyes. What had I done? How could I have even thought of another guy besides Desna? He was the only one that wouldn't turn his back on me.

I thought Mako had changed, but he's still the same self-centered, headstrong boy I dated six months ago. And those things he said about Varrick. It always seemed like he didn't like the guy, but to accuse him of blowing up his own ship? And robbing me? None of it added up. Maybe this was all revenge at me for kissing him. Or maybe the universe saw that there was a chance I was happy for five minutes and it had to ruin that.

I sigh, utterly defeated. I was lucky the shooting area was empty right now. I didn't want anyone to see me like this.

Just as these thoughts escape me, a figure comes up towards me. I quickly wipe my eyes and see who it is.

Desna

After what felt like forever, I finally saw the bright shining city in front of me. I had only been here once with Father, on account of a business matter, but I didn't remember it looking anything like this.

The huge skyscrapers rose up into the clouds, and the horizon was dotted with trees and small ponds. Sato Mobiles filled the streets, and everywhere there were people, talking, walking, and running around.

Despite my tiredness, I rushed to get to land. No one even glanced my way as I walked through the streets.

I wasn't sure where Asami would be, but I figured it was either at her factory or with Varrick.

"Excuse me?" I ask a small child playing in the streets.

"What is it?" the kid asks.

"Could you show me to Varrick Industries or Future Industries?" I ask him.

He seems to think about it for a minute, then asks," What's it worth to you?"

Did this kid just ask for a bribe? For directions? I sigh, and hand the kid some change. He nods. "Future Industries is at the far end of town. Big building, can't miss it. Varrick is right around the corner," he explains.

I sigh, but thank the kid anyway.

I head toward Varrick Industries first, since that seemed to be closer. I found it right away, so I guess it was worth paying the kid.

Asami

I blinked twice, but it was still there. Was I dreaming? Hallucinating? I was sure I had been thinking about Desna a lot lately, but this was insane. He was right in front of me, even walking towards me. I stand up to get a better look and wipe my eyes again.

"Desna?" I ask when he's so close there's no way he can't be my imagination.

He only grins. "Have you forgotten me already?" he asks.

I only half hear what he says, because I'm jumping into his arms in a split second. His arms come around me and hold me. "Desna, it's really you," I whisper into his shoulder.

"Yeah, it is," he says. His body is so warm, his arms so strong. I've missed it all so much. Seeing him makes me forget about everything I was just crying about.

Finally, I have to pull away from him. "How?"

"It's...a long story. Can we go somewhere?" he asks. Seeing him made me completely forget the dangers of him being here. Mako still didn't know about us, and he would probably think Desna was trying to get information by coming here. Something told me Unalaq didn't know Desna was here either.

I take Desna to my apartment. "Do you want some water? Or tea?" I ask him.

"No," he says. He opens his mouth, as if to say something else, but thinks better of it. I boil some water for myself just to calm down and sit down on the couch. Desna, who had been standing, sits down with me.

"So, you're here," I say, not sure how to start.

He nods. "I am. I guess you're wondering why."

I shrug. "Yeah, kind of."

He sighs. "I'm here...because you're here," he tells me. He glances up at me, perhaps to see my expression. I don't know what my face looks like, but inside my heart is melting. I've never heard anything so sweet from anyone before. He traveled halfway around the world for me. It takes everything in me not to hug him. "That came out...not how I meant it. What I meant was, I had to leave. This was the first place I thought of."

"What do you mean you had to leave? What happened?" I ask.

He looks at me. "Promise you won't hate me," he whispers, taking my hands.

"I promise," I say without a second of hesitation.

He takes a deep breath. "Wait, before I tell you, there's just something..." He never finishes what he was going to say. Before I can register what he's doing, I feel two strong hands cradle my face, bringing my mouth closer and closer to his. My eyes naturally fall shut. Finally, our lips meet, and my hands find his shoulders. They make their way up to his neck and hair as I feel it in between my fingers. He smells different than last time, but his touch is so familiar. It continues to bring me closer to him until we're inseparable. Our lips moved together like they had never left each other, like we were back at the South Pole, except this time I was here to stay.

I was the one to pull away this time, although every piece of me argued against it. Something was still tugging at the back of my mind, the promise I had made to Desna. Nothing could ever make me hate him, but something was definitely about to test me.
