Asami

The plan was simple, straightforward. We break Korra’s father out of jail and get out of there as fast as possible. Varrick would have a boat waiting for us, headed for Republic City. Headed for home.

I tried to tell myself that it was all for the best. I had known Desna, what three days? It wouldn’t have worked out anyway. I’ll just leave without saying a word. After all, he was Unalaq’s son. Who knew what information he would be passing on to him? This was for the best.

“Are you ready, Asami?” Bolin asks, noticing my nerves.

“Everything will work out, right Bolin?” I ask him, desperate for some sort of support.

He smiles at me. “Course it will. We’ll get Korra’s dad, easy. Then we’ll be back home.”

Though it is the answer I wanted, it didn’t have the effect I wanted it to. What’s the point of being home if no one was there? Home was beginning to lose all meaning to me. Maybe I had just spent too much time here.

“You guys ready?” Mako asks. Then he stops, realizing he walked into something. “Are you guys okay?”

Bolin glances at me, but I shake off their looks. “Perfect. Let’s get going.” I secure my old equalist glove onto my palm and test the shock. Still works like a charm, though I haven’t had much use for it lately.

“Good, Korra’s waiting.”

When we get to Korra, she takes Mako and me through an earth tunnel leading to the jail. Bolin goes off with Varrick to make sure everything goes off without a hitch on their part.

When we’re directly under the jail, Korra gives us the signal, and opens up the earth so that we’re back in the open air. In one move, she hops out of the ditch and knocks an unsuspecting guard to the ground. I quickly take grip of his arm and shock him with a flash of blue light.

“My dad’s in there,” Korra tells us, ripping open the nearest cell. Instead of finding Tonraq in there, it’s completely empty. “Where is he?” she asks.

“I’m sorry, Korra. You’ll never see your father again,” a menacing voice tells her. We all spin around to see Unalaq waiting on the far end of the hallway.

“Where’s my father?” Korra demands. The two are in total face off mode, each waiting for the other to make a move.

“On a ship headed to the North. He’ll serve out his sentence there,” Unalaq explains.

“Bring him back,” she growls. “Or I’ll take out you and the rest of your army.”

“Remember who you are. As the Avatar, you cannot threaten war. You must remain neutral, or our tribes will never find unity,” her uncle reminds her. I see in his eyes that he seeks no such unity. He only wants power for himself. The look was unfamiliar to me, except for maybe in the eyes of my own father when all he wanted was revenge.

“No wonder you kept trying to take me away from him,” Korra says of her father.

Instead of reacting harshly, Unalaq barely says anything. “All I’ve ever wanted was to help you realize your destiny.”

Something tells me this destiny is different than anything Korra would want for herself. “Well I don’t want your help anymore.”

After another moment of growling comments, Korra finally spins around and shoots a burst of flames at her uncle. He immediately blocks it with a whip of water, and sends an attack of his own at her. This time, Mako reacts, sends all sorts of flames at Unalaq. Mako quickly gets knocked down, but Korra is still going. She manages to knock Unalaq down with a strong gust of wind. We’re gone before Unalaq can even get up.

“Varrick might be a little bit getting the boat, but I don’t think Unalaq followed us,” Mako reports.

Something had been tugging at the back of my mind since we saw Unalaq. It was slowly becoming more and more evident, until I couldn’t take it anymore. “Guys, there’s…something I have to do. I’ll be back before the boat leaves, but I have to go.”

Mako and Korra exchange a look, but Mako finally nods. “Okay, we’ll wait for you on the boat.”

I give him a gracious smile before running off into the city. I crossed my fingers that Unalaq hadn’t come home yet as I rushed to the palace door. I knew I was taking a long shot, but I still knocked on the huge door.

To my relief, Desna opened the door. “What are you doing here?” he asks me. I grab his hand before he can say anything and lead him into the deserted city streets.

Since I saw Unalaq, all I could think about was how opposite he was from Desna, with everything from the look in his eyes. I knew Desna had no part of whatever his father was planning, and I knew I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.

“Asami, what’s the matter?” he asks, seeing right through me.

Looking at Desna’s eyes was just a little too much for me. My life had been hell the last six months, and then Desna came around and fixed it all. Now I was being ripped away from him. “Desna, I have to go.”

“Go? What do you mean?” he asks.

“I have to go back to the city. A civil war is about to break out here, and Korra needs me there.” I get choked up for a moment, before saying, “I hope you can understand.”

He sighs, but nods. “Of course. You have a duty, a company…” He trails off, not quite sure what to say.

I look into his gray eyes. They’re shaky now, unsure. “This isn’t the end,” I whisper to him. “I promise.”

He gives me a swift sure nod before taking my face in his hands, gently but with enough force to bring my mouth up to his. His hands move off of my cheeks and onto my back as I begin to react. My mouth moves with his, our kiss stronger than both of us. I wrap my arms around his neck, my finger intertwined with his hair. It’s the only thing keeping me up right now as I melt into his arms.

After what feels like forever, we both break away, but neither of us move. “I’ll see you,” he whispers, letting me go. My skins feels empty where his hands once were, like it’s missing something. I shake the feeling off as I turn to walk away.

“Goodbye,” I tell him, not sure how I managed to get the words out. I turn and go, back to Varrick’s ship where they’ll all be waiting for me. Waiting to take me away.
