Walking into the school halls were fairly easy, but when I spotted Aaron at my locker, leaning on it with his tousled dark hair and his white t shirt loose on his body, my heart sinks. Seeing him gives me Goosebumps, and my stomach forms butterflies. Who does he think he is, looking all nonchalant leaning on my locker? Instead of going to my locker, I stride past him, ignoring his frown look at me when I go up to jenny. She’s surprised when she sees me. “Hey,” I say to her.
She turns serious, “Do you still hate me?” she asks. Her eyes twinkle of regret. I smile.
“No I don’t. You’re still my best friend, Jen.” I tell her, she beams and pulls me into a tight hug. Then she pulls away from the hug with a concerned look.
“Im so, so sorry, Luce. I regret what I said, honestly.” She pleads.
“It’s okay, I forgive you.” I laugh but it comes out croaky. Then I break into a grin, “So, anything exciting happen to you?”
She smiles brightly, “No, you? How’s you and… you know.” She nudges me and winks, but her eyes show no joy.
I look away and bite my lip, “He’s a jerk. Can we not talk about him, please?”
She nods, “If you want to talk about it, im right here, Luce. Okay?”
I smile and go straight to the point. I lean in. “Do you know an Isabelle?”
“Isabelle… who?”
“I don’t know her last name, but it’s really important.” I add.
She hesitates, “Well… I know of an Isabelle. She apparently attends Rock Hill High school, and an ex-cheerleader. That’s all I know, though.”
“Okay, so she goes to Rock hill High, does anyone else know her?” I ask. Rock hill High school is just 30 minutes away, and their school often verse ours.
Her eyebrows crunch together, “Why are you so curious?” she says, “I only know of her because she’s a cheerleader, that’s all.”
I sigh, “Thanks anyway,” Then I spot Adam a few metres away. “Hang around at lunch?”
She smiles, “I’d like that.”
And with that, I walk away from her and make a face behind her back. “Adam!” I call out. My best friend Adam. We’ve hardly talked all this week, and last week. I miss him heaps, and ever since I’ve been with Aaron, our conversations are vague. It’s always like, ‘Hey’ and ‘Bye’. Seeing him stand there just makes me realise just how much he means to me. Such a good friend and I never appreciate it.
He turns to face me, and his face softens. His brown eyes glint with mischief. “Lucy, I’ve missed you.” He says with in a low voice.
I hug him and he yelps in surprise. “I know I’ve hardly talked to you in weeks, but I’ve missed you too. Like crazy.”
I let go. “You can’t get rid of me too easily.” He grins.
“Who said I was getting rid of you?” I challenge.
He nods to Jenny, “You back friends? Never realised you were fighting, I had to ask Lisa.”
I follow his gaze, and look at him. “Yeah… there’s a lot you don’t know.”
“Do tell.” He says.
I shake my head, and manage a smile and raise my arm for our fist pump. It’s our signal. He does the same and we laugh, then he clears his throat. Puzzled, I turn around to see Aaron looking at me full of sorrow and regret. My face goes red; my heart drops just looking at him.
“Trouble in paradise?” Adam asks his face grim.
I grit my teeth, “Were not talking… at the moment, or ever.” I really want to find who this Isabelle girl is.
“Why?” Adam asks, curious.
Adam is my bestest best friend, but should I tell him the truth? I don’t want to tell him about losing my virginity with Aaron, so I tell him half the truth. “He loves someone else… Isabelle? He didn’t tell me directly, but I heard him say something about her. But I don’t know who she is.”
Adam raises an eyebrow, “Weird.” Is all he says?
Eager to change the subject I grab his arm, “Let’s go to class.” I smile and he returns it. I missed him.
