"Talk?" He asks, mocking me. The wind has picked up speed, sweeping his hair across his face. It's then that I notice the jagged pink scar that stretches from the hairline above his left eye to the right edge of his jaw. I feel both pity and triumph seeing the permanent mark I left.
"Yes. Talk." The longer I stand here, the more I regret agreeing to this plan of Luke's. I know he can't hurt me here - at least physically - but who knows how long it'll be before he and his master figure out a way into my mind and my memories?
"Unless you plan to tell me where you and Skywalker are hiding, I have no interest in talking. And, based on our last encounter, I doubt that is what you're here for. So tell me, scavenger," he stalks closer to me and I take a step back. "Why are you wasting my time?"
There's a flicker of vulnerability in his obsidian eyes; I decide to exploit it. "Why did you murder your father?" His eyes widen at my direct question and I see that little boy for a brief moment. Then he's gone again, replaced by nothing but malice and simmering rage.
"Don't ever speak to me about that coward," he growls. His voice makes me want to run away, but I force my feet to remain planted.
"You think he's the coward? You're the one who ran away because your parents were too busy to pay attention you," I sneer.
His eyes burn with such loathing that I swear they glow red for a brief moment.
"Careful, scavenger. You don't want to end up like your family, do you?"
My eyes burn with unshed tears. "You know nothing of my family."
"Are you sure about that?" His smile is venomous. "Why do you think they never went back for you?"
The world turns red as the last bit of pity I felt for him vanishes. Agony and rage consume me and flood my body with a power that makes my veins thrum. I feel the Force surging in my chest.
Suddenly the mighty Kylo Ren is on his knees, clutching his head and writhing in pain. The landscape around us flickers, reflecting the chaos in his head. It isn't until he glares up at me with red-rimmed eyes that I notice my outstretched hand, gripping his mind with the Force. Just like he did to me.
I'm torn between what I know is right and what I know feels right. I want him to know the pain that he's caused me and millions of others in the universe. But that isn't the way of the Jedi, and it's not what Luke would want. He still thinks Ben can be resurrected from the merciless abomination that is Kylo Ren.
I lower my hand and he gasps, falling on his hands with his head bowed. Slight tremors rock his body as if he had been electrocuted. I crouch in front of him and he looks up at me, eyes a mixture of wonder, anger, and confusion.
"The Supreme Leader was right," he pants. "You have darkness in your heart."
"You're wrong," I protest, shaking my head. "I'm not like you. I'm not a monster."
"Maybe not. But you will be soon." He rises steadily to his feet and stares down at me, the still-healing scar making him even more intimidating than before. "You were going to kill me. I felt it in my mind, and saw it in your eyes. Something stopped you, but you almost did it."
"I won't kill you or anyone else. I'm not a murderer." My voice is unsure, like I'm still trying to convince myself.
"Don't underestimate yourself, Rey." He calls me by my name for the first time I can recall. "You are capable of so much more than you realize. Skywalker is holding you back! The Resistance will try to suppress you, to control you. You can't let them strip you of your potential."
