Y/N giggled as she swam somersaults underneath the water. She had just been able to escape her teacher's gaze, and had been exploring the nearby waters as much as she had wanted to.
She suddenly paused as she noticed how the sand seemed to rise.
Gasping as her head went above the surface, she skillfully climbed up a smooth rock and stared dreamily at the beach shores of Iwatobi, where there were dozens of humans running around or soaking up the summer sun.
The young mermaid was curious about humans, even at her young age. The possibility of her curious nature came from her mother, who was just as infatuated at the life style of the bipedal creatures.
Y/N tightened her grip on the edge of the rock as she suddenly felt as if she were being watched. Scanning the beach with a fearful gaze, she finally locked eyes on a pair of ocean blue ones.
She gasped as she watched the human boy, who had been staring at her with every part of his body was submerged under the water, besides from his nose up, much like a whale or a dolphin, disappear under the water. Y/N whipped her head back and forth when the boy didn't come back up, and she began to worry about him, even if she didn't know him. Can humans even breath under water for that long?! She thought.
"Who are you?" Y/N screamed as she heard a voice, before she clamped her hands over her mouth and stared behind her with wide eyes. There he was, the human boy, sitting on the rock and staring at her with a blunt expression.
"You speak my language?" The (H/C) questioned as her (E/C) eyes seemed to sparkle in amazement. "I am Y/N." Without thinking twice, the female willingly introduced herself. "Who are you?" She repeated.
"Haru." The female pouted slightly at his monotonous response. "Are you a mermaid?" The boy, possibly a year older than the female, asked, staring at her (F/C) tail.
"That's right! And you're a human?" She asked him, eyes sparkling as he lifted one of his legs out of the water.
The younger Haru grunted as the female grabbed his foot and stared at it in awe as she watched him wiggle his toes.
"Hey, Haru, let's be friends!" The female exclaimed, looking at the boy with a bright smile.
The boy blinked in surprise, before he nodded his head hesitantly in agreement. "Alright."
-Present-
"I knew that you were here, Y/N." Hearing her name, the female glanced up in surprise, before her lips puckered into a pout and she glanced away from him. "Everyone's worried about you." The usually monotonous male stated as he sat beside her on the top of the semi-flat rock.
"Sorry. I just had to have some alone time." Y/N whispered, pulling her knees to her chest as she gazed out at the moonlit water.
"Do you miss being a mermaid?" Haru suddenly questioned the female.
She quickly whipped her head to look at the boy, surprised by both his question and the concerned look that was on his face. Y/N then sighed.
"There's some things I miss." She admitted. "But, I wouldn't change the time that I've been able to be with you and the others for anything." She stated.
"I remember how you've always wished to become a human." Haru sighed. "I never understood why you would want to, since you were always able to swim and be free."
"But when that's all you do, it can be tiresome." Y/N told him. "I wasn't able to do anything you and other humans were able to. Life for me was boring and lonely. But...swimming with you and the others...I don't feel like that at all. I feel like I'm a part of something important." She admitted.
