"That's beautiful Sophia" I said softly as I looked down at the picture she was currently coloring, a picture of a field full of flowers with the sun shining behind an assortment of clouds. "I always loved flowers, but daddy wont let mamma put them in the house" She said sadly as she finished coloring a small purple lily. I put my arm around her and pulled her close into my side, and squeezed her side gently. "My daddy hated flowers too, damn shame. There so beautiful" I told her, grabbing a crayon and putting a tiny heart in the corner of her coloring book.
"Was your daddy mean to you?" Sophia asked me, turning to face me. Her big blue eyes were looking at me with sadness, and behind her I could see her parents arguing about something near their tent. "He was" i said sadly giving her a small nod. Sophia looked away from my eyes and started playing with her dirty fingers. "Sometimes I wish those monsters would take him away from me" She whispered, and i couldn't help but feel a tear well up in my eye as this small girl spoke to me.
"Is that bad for me to think?" She asked me with tears forming in her own blue eyes, blue eyes that looked so much like my own. I shook my head at her and kissed the top of her head, "Our daddy's deserve worse than that" I told her. Carol came over looking somber as usual before smiling gently at me and leading her daughter away from camp and over to her family's tent. I looked over and saw Ed glaring at me while smoking a cigarette, he stomped it out before heading inside of his tent. I felt the sudden urge to run over there and yank Sophia out and bring her into my own tent, but I knew that would only cause them more problems.
I sighed and picked up the coloring utensils that the kids had all abandoned and placed them in Carol's bag that was sitting beside the table. Camp really was boring today, laundry was done, there wasn't any food to cook and no walkers were around, so finding things to keep everyone busy was proven to be a difficult task. Dale and Glenn were sitting on top of the RV keeping watch, Carol's family was in their tent so were the Grimes's. T-dog, Jackie, Andrea and Amy were all down by the water, and Jim and Shane were working on one of the cars. Merle I think was in his tent but I haven't seen him in a while, so like i said a boring day and all I wanted was for Daryl to come back so I could see him.
I walked into the RV to look for something that maybe would entertain me for a while, and found a pile of books. I never was much of a reader, but if it kept my mind occupied then so be it, I picked up one called Behind the Glass and sat down on the bench to read it, but the book was terrible and I soon found myself drifting off into sleep.
A scream outside pulled me out of the light sleep I was in, my head slumped over the table in the RV. I grabbed my gun out of my back pocket and took off running to where it was coming from, it sounded like the kids. "Carl!" Lori was shouting as she was running behind me, and I followed behind Rick and the other who were running into the woods. Carl, Sophia and Eliza came running out of a clearing in the woods and they all ran straight into their mothers arms. We all stopped when we saw a walker munching on the ass end of a dead deer. I smiled though when I saw the three familiar green and white arrows with the DD engraved at the top. Daryl's arrows.
The kids screamed when the walker turned around with parts of the deer in it's hands and started growling, blood pouring out of his mouth. I gagged when Dale beheaded it with an ax that he brought with him. "That is disgusting" Amy said from beside me, and her and Andrea turned and headed back to camp. Some rustling in the trees caught everyone's attention and all eyes were on the woods, weapons drawn. Enough people were pointing their guns at the woods, so I just kept mine by my side. It only sounded like one walker, there didn't need to be all of us there to shoot it, that would be overkill.
It got louder and louder until the figure finally stepped out of the wood line. And crossbow in hand, scowl on his face and dirt smeared through his long dirty blonde hair, Daryl Dixon stepped into my view. His eyes went immediately to the deer laying on the ground with the dead walker beside it. "Dammit!" he shouted and kicked the walker that was laying in front of the deer. I just leaned against a tree playing with my gun, waiting until Daryl's loud obscenities stopped. "You gonna stop him any time soon?" Rick asked from my side as we watched Daryl continuously kick the walker in anger. I shrugged and smirked at my best friend that hadn't noticed me yet "Hey Dixon" i called out.
"What?!" he shouted turning around angrily to see who called him out. His eyes finally caught mine, and his eyes went wide. I smiled brightly as I walked over to him, placing my gun in my back pocket. I stopped right in front of him and looked him over. He looked exactly the same as I saw him a couple weeks ago, dirty blonde hair that fell into his blue eyes. Baggy pants with hunting boots and a typical shirt with no sleeves. I felt warmth on my cheek and looked up to see Daryl reaching out and gently resting his hand on the side of my face.
I leaned into his touch and placed my hand on top of his. "We thought you were dead vannah" He whispered and looked me over just as i did to him. I just shook my head and threw my arms around his neck holding him tightly. I felt Daryl wrap his arms around my waist and bury his head in my neck, Daryl smelled like dirt mixed with sweat but I didn't care and I just held onto the man I thought was dead. "How sweet" I heard Shane scoff behind us. Daryl let go of me quickly but kept one firm hand around my waist. "Man you bet shut your damn mouth, unless you want an arrow through your brain!" Daryl yelled angrily towards Shane who was standing with the rest of the group behind us.
"Shane, don't" Lori said, she was standing beside Rick and both of them held onto Carl who was standing between them. Shane was just looking me up and down before he stormed off towards camp, Something about him rubbed me the wrong way. "I swear ill fucking kill him if he looks at you the wrong way" Daryl said so only I could hear. I scoffed " You don't have to worry about me Dare" I said elbowing him slightly. He grunted before rolling his eyes at me and grabbing his crossbow that had fallen onto the ground.
"I always worry about you" he said softly before walking past me and the group and back into camp to find Merle. "That's Daryl for ya" I said laughing at the group as we all walked back to camp. "That boy loves you" Dale said from my left as the rest of our group passed us and went in different direction. I looked quickly over at him and just shook my head. "Nah, Daryl and I have been friends since we were kids" I told Dale who swung his rifle off of his back and into his hands. I wished Daryl loved me, I wish he felt the same for me as I do for him. It was painful to love someone from afar for so long and never having the balls to tell them how you feel.
"I've got a lot of years on me kid, and the way that boy looked at you tells me otherwise" Dale said with a smile before taking his place on top of the RV. I sighed and looked over to see Daryl with Merle skinning some squirrels at the table. Daryl saw me and waved me over "Get your ass over here princess, nobody can skin quite like you can" Merle shouted when he saw Daryl wave to me. I smiled and walked over knowing that ever though the boys could hunt with the best of them, they could never skin an animal as quick and efficient as i could. I grabbed a squirrel and had the skin off within seconds, and it took me under a minute to finish the rest of the dozen that Daryl had caught. I stabbed my knife into the table and wiped the blood onto Daryl's pants who was sitting beside me.
The boys gave me that look I knew all too well. "You want me to cook them too huh?" I asked playing with the handle of my hunting knife. Daryl and Merle nodded their heads up and down like little kids and I laughed before tossing the meat into a bowl and walking over to the fire to prepare dinner for the group. Carol and Amy came to help me about halfway through and I taught the two of them the best way to cook the different kinds of meat. Daryl and Merle just sat at the table laughing and looking over in my direction every once and a while, I stuck my tongue out at the two and turned back to finish frying up the meat at the fire. I just sat and thought about how much i wanted what Dale said to be true.
