"Cheryl!"
33-year-old Cheryl Cole looked up from the paperwork she was engrossed in, smiling straight away as she saw her secretary and good friend, Lily England, standing in her doorway with a bag of takeout in each hand. She was grateful for the staff at her and her brother's law firm; the staff at Cole and Tweedy; Attorneys at Law always treating the two extremely professional lawyer siblings with the upmost respect as they really were the best in the entire United Kingdom.
"How did you know I hadn't eaten yet?" Cheryl giggled as she stood up from her glass desk; her stomach rumbling straight away as the scent of Chinese takeaway wafted through the luxurious office.
"Because you hadn't called me yet to pick up lunch and it's nearly two in the afternoon," Lily raised an eyebrow as they sat at a table near the large window, "This morning's case really took it out of you?"
"Yes, because that was a kid man – like who hurts their own children and then how exactly am I supposed to keep my emotions in check about it?" Cheryl whined as she shook her head...
In the eight years since Cheryl had first become a lawyer, she had seen her share of cases involving everything from drug crimes to domestic violence. She and her younger brother, Garry Tweedy, were both lawyers; Garry having finished law school at twenty-five just like his sister had done and had gone to work at the same law firm straight away. However, just three years ago, the two had ventured out on their own and started their own law firm together, calling it Cole and Tweedy; Attorneys at Law. In three years, they'd become one of the most successful law firms in the entire United Kingdom, getting cases from up and down the country as not only were they two of the best lawyers in the country, but they also had some of the most credible lawyers working for them as well.
"Where's Garry then? Is he out right now at court?" Lily asked, wondering where the young man was as he was often sat right here with them, having lunch as well.
"Yeah he literally just texted me to tell me he was off out; yesterday was the last proper day of the case and today the jurors give their answer today on what they think," Cheryl explained as she munched away on some sweet and sour chicken, "Garry's had his hands full defending this guy; the cops and prosecution are doing everything to tear this poor guy down and he's done nothing wrong, even evidence is showing he's done nothing wrong."
"Damn; then I hope Gaz returns victorious today else he'll be really upset." Lily stuck her bottom lip out. Cheryl nodded her head, sighing.
"He'll be beating himself up no doubt. I tell him that he can't blame himself when things go wrong because we do all we can, but I understand at the same time because it's hard for us to not blame ourselves sometimes." She replied, shaking her head in despair. Lily went to say something before they were interrupted by the phone ringing, only to then hear the Irish accent of the lobby receptionist and Cheryl's other friend, Nadine, come over the phone speaker.
"Attorney Cole, you've got a call on line one – Attorney Cole, call on line one."
"Fuck's sake." Cheryl muttered, standing up whilst Lily giggled away to herself. She went over to the desk and picked up the phone, pressing the button to answer...
"Good afternoon, Attorney Cole speaking; how may I help you?"
"Hello; Attorney Cole – so formal."
She rolled her eyes; it was her ex-husband, Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini. She sighed out; even she had to admit that she was glad to have reverted back to her former name after divorcing this scum bag man. Even though this particular name was associated with her first ex-husband from many years ago, it was certainly a better name than the one associated with Jean-Bernard.
