Lewis POV:

“What should I do mam?” I cried, putting my weary head on her cold gravestone. “Can’t, I just can’t… You would know what to do. You always know what to do… well you did…apart from one thing. Why did you let him do that to you? I suppose I ask myself the same question.”

Rain started to fall heavily; nobody could tell I was crying. I used the water for a good chance to clean my ruined, bloodstained top, failing miserably.

“Everybody will think I killed him. They thought that I ki-killed you, I didn’t mam, honest, you know how he was with his drinking, the drugs, the violence…” I chocked, “You are so lucky you’d know…being dead and all… I wish I was”.

Suddenly, I heard a feminine voice shout my name, snapping me out of deliberation. ‘Shit! It was Shannon!’  I huddled into my mother’s gravestone as if it was her body and tried to silence my whimpering. My hiding wasn’t brilliant as my glowing white top was clearly visible against the dull, winter greys and forest green.

Silence was broken as the old, wooden gate banged against the fragile, brick wall. “Lewis” the girl I only met a few days ago called as she trudged through the cemetery, eyes peeled.  I shut mine, blocking out the world wishing it would end.

Everyone has one point in their life where they wish their life could just pause for just a few moments, well this was my moment; even through all the shit I grew up with; this was my moment…

Silence filled the air again; footsteps had stopped.

“You know you can’t run away forever. I wish we could!” I opened my eyes to Shannon crouched down next to me.

“I know but-“

“No ‘but’s’. Everything is okay. I spoke to the police, if my mam agrees, you are allowed to stay at mine until they find you a suitable place to stay” She said softly and slowly.

“CARE!” I shouted.

“Yeah, you have to go into care for 6 months before anyone is allowed to adopt you, it’s the law. Shit I know.”

“Everyone will laugh at me,” I said thinking of all the bullies’ remarks.

“They won’t if you don’t tell them”.

”I suppose. Thanks Shannon” I gave her a true smile. She is just so sweet, I’m so happy I let her into my life.

“Come on” Shannon finally said after several minutes, “we should really get back before we get into my bother”

“I suppose,” I said before helping the beautiful girl to her feet and walking back hand in hand to the house; the place I would no longer call ‘home’.
