When I Call Your Name

The First Time

  Lindsey is speechless! He manages to finally say

  "It's very nice to meet you Wendy, you are a very beautiful young women."

  Wendy blushes and responds

"Thank you Lindsey I'm very happy your feeling better."

  Stevie goes and sits on the bed next to Lindsey. Wendy sits in the chair next to the bed. Lindsey says to Wendy

  "I want to hear everything about you!"

  "Where you go to school, what music you listen to, what you like to eat, everything!"

  Stevie smiles broadly as Wendy starts to tell Lindsey about herself. Wendy says she likes pancakes and french toast for breakfast. She tells him her favorite classes at school are art and literature. Wendy tells him her favorite music is rock and her favorite band is Journey along with Def Leppard besides Fleetwood Mac of course!

  Stevie watches Lindsey drink it all in and listen intently at every word Wendy says to him.

  Wendy finishes talking and looks at Lindsey intently for a moment. Lindsey smiles and asks her

  "What's wrong am I growing another head?"

  Stevie laughs and then Wendy replies

  "I was just looking at your hair, mine and yours are the same color and the curls are almost the same!"

  Stevie feels her eyes water as Wendy takes Lindsey's hands into hers. She says

  "My hands are soft like moms, yours look sore."

  Lindsey responds

  "Ive been asleep so long my calluses have softened."

  "With practice they will be back to normal."

  As they are talking the physical therapy people come into Lindsey's room. One of them that has a name tag that's says Jim. He says

  "Mr Buckingham we need to take you to the physical therapy room to work on your walking."

  Stevie looks at Wendy and says

  "We need to let Lindsey go get better, we can come back soon and visit him."

  Lindsey tries to stand to see off Stevie and Wendy but loses his balance his legs being so week. Wendy catches him and puts her arm around Lindsey.

  Jim and his partner bring a wheelchair over and help Lindsey sit down. Jim says

  "Lets take it easy Mr Buckingham, let us help you build your strength up."

  "You'll be running marathons before you know it!"

  Stevie gives Lindsey a hug and tells him

  "We will be back soon Linds, call us anytime."

  Lindsey feels himself getting misty eyed. He nods afraid to speak that he may let out a sob. Wendy hugs him warmly and says

  "Will you play me a song next time I come back?"

  Lindsey manages to maintain his composure and says

  "Anything for you Wendy, I'll see you soon!"

  With that Stevie and Wendy walk out and away from him. As the staff wheel him to physical therapy Lindsey thinks about how much he's lost over the years he's been gone. Not only does he not have Stevie and his daughter, he's lost everything else. They even sold his house so he doesn't even have a home. Oh he feels the old urges coming on. He wants a drink badly. He wishes he had a razor blade, oh that would feel so good to ease it across his legs.
