When I was younger, this always confused me and at times it still does. Like, why would someone use the Lord's name in such a way if they don't even believe He exists? Here are a few possible explanations that I've thought about...
#1. I asked a man at my church about this once and the answer I got from him was this: People don't think about what they're saying when they say it. Like when you see something exciting, scary, or impressive, the words just come out, whether it be "Oh wow!" "Holy cow!" or in their case ,"Oh my God!" It's just something to express that sudden change of feeling inside.
#2. Another explanation I've thought about is, some of the people who do use His name in vain don't know that it is wrong. They most likely do know about God, whether they believe or not, but maybe they were never told that using God's name in vain is against what the Bible commands.

#3. We've all heard the saying you are what you eat. Well, it's the same concept for this. Being human, we tend to soak in whatever's around us. We're like young children, so when our family/friends constantly say God's name in vain in our presence, they stick with us and soon become habits of our own...habits that are sometimes hard to shake off.
