Chapter 12
After Lorelai had finished her grocery shopping, she decided to head over to the diner before April arrived.
"Hey." Lorelai said as she entered the diner and leant over the breakfast bar to kiss him.
"Hey, you're early." Luke said, sounding surprised.
"I thought we could just talk about what we're going to say to April." She told him as she placed her bags down on the chair next to her.
"Okay, where should we start?" He asked, sounding quite oblivious to the fact that they hadn't even met under familiar circumstances.
"Maybe and introduction might be a great place to start off." Lorelai said, accidentally digging into him. Luke tensed his body at them words, obviously not wanting to be reminded of his stupidity. "Sorry." She added as she squinted her eyes and placed her head into her palms.
"No, you're right. You've only met each other accidentally the day you erm... found out about her existence." Luke replied, not wanting to relive that experience or the argument that came along with it. Before Lorelai could say anything, Luke realised he hadn't mentioned Rory's invite.
"I also invited Rory to come and meet us afterwards because I think it's time we bond together." Luke said sentimentally.
"Look at you Mr Family-Man!" Lorelai replied, making fun of him.
"I'm just trying to be serious about this." Luke said, rather anxiously.
"I know you are babe." Lorelai said as she walked behind the counter and wrapped her arms around his neck. Lorelai then continued to kiss him adoringly which reassured him.
"Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?" Luke asked as he pulled away.
"Many a time." Lorelai said happily before kissing him again.
"This is still my space though, regardless of our relationship." Luke said as he escorted her out from behind the counter.
"Sleeping with the boss gets you nothing!" Lorelai exclaimed a little too loudly as she sat down on a barstool.
"April!" Luke yelled as she walked into the diner, hoping she hadn't just caught the tail-end of what Lorelai had just said.
"Hey Dad." April said with a laugh, possibly aimed at Lorelai."
"There's somebody I'd like you to meet." Luke said nervously as he walked over to Lorelai, filled by April.
"April, this is my fiancé, Lorelai." Luke said, as he introduced the pair.
"We've met." April said with a smile. "It's nice to meet you again though!" April exclaimed, trying to rectify how snotty her previous statement sounded.
"Nice to meet you April." Lorelai replied with a smile and a little laugh. April completely reminded her of Rory at her age which made her quite relaxed in some sense.
"Lorelai's daughter is coming over in an hour to meet up with us too." Luke said, hoping she wouldn't freak out.
"You have a daughter!" April yelled excitedly.
"Yeah, her names Rory. You may have seen her around since she's been back in town for the summer." Lorelai replied happily.
"What's she like?" April asked, taking quite an interest in the sibling situation.
"Well, she has just finished studying at Yale and is staying in town for a while, trying to decide what she's going to do. She absolutely adores books! You and Rory seem pretty alike in all honesty." Lorelai replied reminiscently. All of a sudden, her brain caught up with her words as she hoped that even though April was such a smart girl, she wouldn't catch on to the fact that she hesitated ever so slightly on the 'what she's going to do' part.
"Wow Yale! Prestigious daughter you have there. One can only hope to go to an Ivy League College such as Yale." April replied admiringly, with a sense of somewhat pride twinkling in her eyes.
"I suppose so." Lorelai said with a smile; astonished at how well-mannered April was.
"If I'm anything like Rory, I strongly hope to be as successful as her." April said, already envisioning herself in a cap and gown.
"I'm sure you will be." Luke said with a smile as he refilled Lorelai's cup with decaf which she winced at as she drank it.
"I second that and I am positive that you can do whatever you want to do and be whoever you want to be!" Lorelai added, already feeling connected to April.
"Thanks guys." April responded with a smile as she took a swig of the lemonade that Luke had supplied her with. For the next half hour, Lorelai and April sat there chatting away with the occasional input from Luke. However, every so often, April's mind kept floating back to how young Lorelai looked to be having a Yale graduate as a daughter.
"Lorelai." April said as she began her question.
"Yeah, hon?" Lorelai replied, slightly intimidated by how astute April seemed to be at all times.
"If my question is out of line in any way, shape or form, just let me know because I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable in any wa..."
"It's okay, ask away." Lorelai interrupted during April's rambling session.
"If you're as young as you look, how old were you when you had Rory?" April asked as Lorelai's heart began to race as she knew the inevitable secret was probably going to come up round about now. Luke gave her a reassuring pat on the knee which meant that he was in agreement that the time was right to tell her.
"Well, I got pregnant at 15 with Rory and had her at 16." Lorelai said nervously, hoping that April wouldn't go back home and report this information to her mother.
"Wow, that's only 3 years away from how old I am now! I couldn't imagine how incredibly difficult that must have been." April responded, rather shocked than any other emotion she was feeling at this point.
"Yeah, so take my life story as a potential learning curve to not getting knocked up as a teenager." Lorelai advised her awkwardly.
"Duly noted!" April said, wanting to move on from the topic."
"Erm.. actually April, there's something I've, well we've, been wanting to tell you about." Luke said quietly, making sure no townsfolk were in earshot of the conversation.
"Sure Dad, what is it?" April questioned worriedly.
"Well, I know it's awfully sudden but, Lorelai is pregnant... with twins." Luke said even quieter than before and rather anxiously.
"Congratulations you guys!" April said excitedly, picking up on the hushed voice as she did so.
"Thanks April! They'll definitely need two prominently hardworking big sisters for yours and Rory's talents to rub off on the both of 'em." Lorelai joked, also relieved that her and Luke's situation was handled. Mostly anyways, for the time being at least...*Beep Beep*
Luke immediately pointed at the sign on the wall which perfectly stated that cell phones aren't allowed, which obviously, Lorelai ignored.
"It's Rory." Lorelai said as she flipped open her cell. "She's on her way over." She continued.
"I'll put another pot on then." Luke said, rising up from the table.
"She'll appreciate it!" Lorelai shouted teasingly, knowing very well Luke was repulsed by their addiction to the substance. Nonchalantly, Rory walked through the door spotted April and her Mom talking at the table.
"Hey." Rory chimed as she stood in front of the two.
"Hey sweets." Lorelai said happily.
"Hi, nice to meet you." April beamed.
"Hey April, I've heard a lot about you!" Rory said enthusiastically.
"All good I hope?" April quizzed jestingly.
"Brilliant in fact!" Rory replied whilst taking off her jacket and planting herself on the chair opposite April. "So I hear you want to be a Scientist huh?" Rory asked, sounding rather impressed.
"Yeah, I only want to reach Marie Curie's level, however, Albert Einstein does seem to have a hold on me too." April yet again joked.
"I see, not much to aspire to as of yet then?" Rory responded quirkily.
"Nah, same old, same old." April replied as she took a sip of her drink and carefully placed it back down on the table. April seemed to have just slotted completely into the family on first meet. Lorelai was in complete awe, along with Rory, of this young girl who embraced her studies just as much as Rory did. For a moment, Rory forgot that she would have to put her career on hold for a while until she could actually start planning on how to be a brilliant international correspondent like Christina Amanpour.Luke rejoined them back at the table soon after and refilled cups as well as filling up their stomachs with pancakes. Many hours had passed and it seemed as if they had been BFF's since fifth grade! Nevertheless, Luke had received a call half an hour prior from Anna Nardini notifying him that she was on her way from Woodbury to pick up her daughter. If Luke was to share his opinion of who he thought the most overprotective, argumentative and also cynical woman was, he would pick Anna Nardini straight out of thin air. Luke missed out on 12 years of his biological kids life and basically filled in on being a father when Rory was younger! To this day, Luke still wouldn't have known if April hadn't gone searching on her own accord which made Luke twice the more angry than he normally was with Anna.
Rory and Lorelai had just said their goodbyes and left for home whilst Anna was on her way to collect April. Having come to a decision that it would be more awkward and tense with the two of them there, they decided to leave before they would have to endure an uncomfortable introduction.
"April is just..."
"Like you?" Lorelai guessed, attempting to complete her daughter's statement.
"Yes! It's crazy." Rory said.
"She took the pregnancy revelation well." Lorelai said after a pause.
"Oh my god! I forgot to ask. What exactly did she say?" Rory asked.
"The most supportive thing a twelve year old, pre-teen could say. The word congratulations!" Lorelai said.
"I guess she was okay about it then." Rory replied.
"Yeah, I guess she was." Lorelai agreed as she put her arm around her daughter's shoulder and walked home contently.I'm so sorry I haven't posted in a month😭 I sort of hit a brick wall for a while and I have been trying to work on my other story. I'll try to be more consistent from now on guys😇
