"Thank you so much Amirah for coming on short notice," Jacqueline, the single mother I babysat for, said to me.

"Yeah no problem Jackie," I smiled.

"Let me know if this is taking a toll on your schoolwork," she told me and I nodded.

"It's okay. I enjoy spending time with Laila as well," I tickled her four year old daughter on the counter and she laughed.

"Alright thank you again. I added an extra 60 onto your pay this week for coming on such short notice. Do you think you can babysit on Friday?" She asked and I nodded.

"Alright I'll see you on Friday," I set Laila down and she ran over to her mother.

"Bye Mimi," Laila waved.

"Bye Lai Lai," I waved at her and told her mother bye before leaving.

I got into my 2006 Honda Civic and made my way back home. I made a mental note to call my sister some time today. She was literally the only family member that was still talking to me.

My father is a lawyer and my mom was as well. My parents and I had a pretty restrained relationship. It all started when I came to college. I wanted to go out of state, but they weren't having it and they were also upset that I wanted to do my own thing for once.

They were upset that I didn't want to become a lawyer and that I changed my major at the beginning of my Sophomore year to secondary education in 2016. I was attending the University of Houston and once he found out that I didn't want to follow the vision they had for me, he cut me off. They stopped paying my tuition and they took everything that they ever bought for me, including my car and my apartment.

I was out of school for an entire school year because I had no means to pay for it and no support from anyone, but my sister. Sandra let me live there for about a year until I got back in school. While I lived with her, I had three jobs until I could move out on my own and get back into school.

In fall 2017, I finally re-enrolled at the University of Houston to pursue my degree in secondary education. I was currently in my senior year and I was about to graduate in two months. I'm definitely proud that I did all of this on my own and that I was pursing my dream job. I've always loved children and I was excited to start.

My father also didn't approve of my current boyfriend, Brandon. We met the second semester of my freshman year when I was doing some community service around town. The bus broke down on our way back from our destination and we ended up taking it to an auto repair shop near by. He just so happened to be shadowing over there and that's how it all started.
