Has He Always Been Dumb Or Is It Something That's Gotten Worse Over The Years?

Recap from previous chapter:

"That's who you got pregnant?" I asked.

Chase nodded.

"I thought she was homeschooled now, what is she doing here?"

Before he could answer she turned in our direction and caught sight of Chase immediately. She took in all of us and I could see the panic in her eyes.

"Shit." Chase muttered.

It was as if time had been frozen while Chase and Claire stared each other down, neither knowing what to do in this situation.

Rebecca and Arsen glanced back at us, curious as to why we had stopped walking. I looked at Rebecca but she wasn't looking at me, her eyes were on Chase. She followed his gaze to Claire and I watched as her expression slowly changed from confused to understanding.

"I'll see you in first period." Chase muttered, making his way over to Claire.

Rebecca, Arsen, and I watched him walk up to her. Claire looked alarmed and ready to bolt at any given moment. Their conversation was whispered and we couldn't hear a word of what they were saying.

I grabbed onto Arsen and Rebecca's arms and started to drag them away, trying to give my brother a little bit of privacy.

"Is that her?" Rebecca asked when we were far enough away.

"Yes." I nodded.

"So she goes here now?" Rebecca asked, her tone a little more hostile than it was before.

I shrugged. "I'm not sure, but that doesn't change anything Bec, Chase likes you."

"Yeah well," Rebecca snorted. "he clearly liked her just fine as well."

I rolled my eyes and gave my friend a hug. "Don't worry about it."

"Easy for you to say, your boyfriend didn't knock anybody up."

Rebecca and I glanced at Arsen, who was leaning up against the wall opposite of us and staring at his phone screen.

"You didn't get anyone pregnant, right?" Rebecca asked her brother.

Arsen looked up from his phone screen appearing to be confused. He hadn't heard a word of what Rebecca said.

"Just say you didn't." I told him.

Arsen looked between his sister and I for a moment before grinning and shaking his head.

"Oh no, I'm not falling for this." He chuckled.

Rebecca and I glanced at each other. "Fall for what?"

Arsen walked around us and put his arms over our shoulders. "Nice try."

Rebecca and I watched as Arsen walked away, heading for our first period class with a pep in his step.

He seemed proud of himself.

"Has he always been dumb or is this something that's gotten worse over the years?" I asked, feigning concern.

I was well aware of my girlfriends unease towards Claire, I could practically feel her eyes burning in the back of my head. I understood Rebecca's feelings but that didn't mean I liked it. Claire wasn't my favorite person, I wasn't impressed with how she was handling the pregnancy, but that didn't change the fact that she was carrying my child.
